DRS, Covid allowance and other changes for Indian Premier League 2022
With the IPL less than a fortnight away, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced two major changes in the rules for the upcoming season of IPL. The most prominent alteration comes to the rule, where playing XI gets affected by COVID and results in their inability to field.
In such a first case, BCCI will try to reschedule the match, and if that is not possible, the matter will be referred to the Technical Committee for the final call.
BCCI said, "The BCCI, at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee. The decision of the IPL Technical Committee will be final and binding." This is a shift from the previous rule which said that the board "will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the franchisee will be deemed to have lost the match with its opponent being awarded 2 points."
DRS
The second-most important change has come in the number of referrals. Teams now would be happier as the DRS has been increased from one to two in order to cut down on wrong decisions.
"In each innings, the number of reviews has been increased from one to two," the BCCI said and endorsed the recent Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) suggestion that the new batsman will have to take the strike even if the batsmen in the middle crossover during a catch.
"Upon a catch dismissal, irrespective of whether the batsmen have crossed or not the incoming batsman will take the strike, except if it's the last ball of the over," the BCCI informed the teams.
Super Over
BCCI has also remarked that if Super Over fails to break the tie in playoffs/ final, the team finishing higher in the league will be declared the winner.
This year's tournament will take place in Mumbai and Pune, and the playing conditions have stated that the BCCI has the discretion to conduct the playoffs at any other venue. This indicates, if not confirmed, then this year's playoffs will be staged in Ahmedabad.
It will be a little different and exciting to see the competition happening in this 15th edition of the Indian Premier League with all these new changes.
