Cricket News: Yashasvi Jaiswal bids for India's role with performances at Vijay Hazare Trophy
The Indian domestic season is often an excellent time to look at players who could be in the reckoning for a future call-up in the Indian cricket team
In that sense, one player who has done wonderfully well in recently pushing his case to the board is Mumbai's Yashasvi Jaiswal.
In the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, Yashasvi Jaiswal made a slow start to the tournament as he could manage only 10 in his first game against Bengal.
However, he's shone since in the next three matches. He slammed an excellent ton against services in his tournament's second match.
He followed that up with another hundred, a 142 against Maharashtra. And his most recent showing against Mizoram saw him notch up a half-century.
It means he's now scored three straight scores over 50 in his last three matches, and naturally, people are beginning to wonder about his chances for an India call-up.
First, it is worth noting that competition for slots in the Indian team is fierce. Even if one considers replacing Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, the team already has the likes of Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ishan Kishan on the waiting.
For the other, this is the first significant glimpse of form that Yashasvi Jaiswal has shown recently. Granted, he is a talented player and provides a different option to those players mentioned before.
However, he will most likely have to wait a while before he can be considered for a call-up or a significant run in the team.
That being said, it does his chances of getting a run in the team no harm whatsoever if he continues to put in such similar performances in the domestic circuit.
Many believe that IPL performances matter more in the grand scheme of things, and there is some truth to that, but it is still essential to consistently do well, even in domestic cricket.
This, of course, brings us to the next big point – his IPL performances.
Towards the latter half of the 2022 IPL season, Yashasvi Jaiswal's performances got better, and he managed to get a couple of half-centuries as the Rajasthan Royals marched to the final.
However, if he wants to make a more significant case for himself in the Indian team set-up, he will need to have an unforgettable IPL season.
It doesn't have to be an Orange Cap-winning season – although that will certainly help! But he can score about 400-odd runs at a strike rate of more than 140. He has the talent to do that.
He will likely be promoted quickly to the team - even though he is not a starter at present - if he can do so.
Yes, Yashasvi Jaiswal is still very young and is viewed by many as a prospect for the future. But if he continues to perform the way he has in recent times, there's no reason the end can't be now.
