Cricket News: England VS South Africa- Final ODI match at Headingley was abandoned due to rain, the series was drawn
Rainy conditions at Headingley derailed England's efforts to win a first white-ball series since Jos Buttler became the captain
Less than 28 overs of play were possible in Leeds, with the rain delay and restart before the match was halted in the first innings with South Africa at 159 for two, which resulted in a 1-1 tie in the one-day international series.
Quinton de Kock helped the Proteas get off to a strong start with a brilliantly composed 92 from 76, just missing out on his 18th ODI century.
After losing five of their previous eight white-ball games this month, Buttler's England entered the last game trying to avert the possibility of suffering a third consecutive white-ball series loss.
When David Willey dismissed Janneman Malan in the sixth over, just as the opening combination was attempting to advance, England achieved their first breakthrough after the visitors had played it safe for the first few overs.
Following the early wicket, South Africa ramped up the tempo and reached 60 for one at the end of the first 10 overs.
After hitting Adil Rashid for two consecutive fours in the spinner's first over, De Kock reached his first half-century of the ODI series in the fifteenth over.
South Africa continued to gain ground after losing an early wicket; they were 60 for one at the end of the powerplay but 89 for one when the South Africa wicketkeeper reached his milestone. His 50 came from 39 balls, including nine fours.
After putting up 75 runs with De Kock, Rassie Van Der Dussen was the second and last wicket to fall for South Africa. After scoring a calculated 26 from 38, Van Der Dussen mistimed a sweep off Rashid straight to Jonny Bairstow on the deep square leg boundary.
When the first rain delay occurred, the game was cut to 45 overs on each side and the players returned to the field for just 6.5 overs before the weather intervened again and the game was abandoned shortly after 4 o'clock.
