Xabi Alonso: Victor Boniface is a 'complete' striker for Bayer Leverkusen
Victor Boniface bagged another brace as Bayer Leverkusen delivered a resounding 5-1 victory against newly-promoted Darmstadt to take top spot in the Bundesliga.
Under the leadership of Xabi Alonso, who endured a frustrating previous campaign, Leverkusen are now displaying a brand of breathtaking football.
However, the true highlight of their impressive resurgence is the emergence of their goal-scoring sensation, Boniface.
Last season, Patrik Schick struggled, finding the back of the net just four times due to injuries, a stark contrast to his 24-goal tally the year before.
With the Czech striker side-lined due to a torn abductor, the responsibility of scoring goals has fallen squarely on Boniface's shoulders, and he has risen to the occasion with remarkable success.
He has already notched four goals and provided two assists in his first three Bundesliga appearances, suggesting that Leverkusen may have unearthed a potential star.
"To be honest, I can't believe it at all. I am very happy with my performance and that of the team," said Boniface.
"It is very important to win such games with a good performance and a result like that. If you have the confidence and a team that believes in you, you can do anything."
Alonso has also been impressed by the Nigerian's performances so far, and hopes to see him build on the early success.
"He's not just a classic striker, not just a bomber - he's complete," said Alonso.
"We are happy with him, he has scored four goals so far, but we expect more."
