Why was Thomas Tuchel sacked as Chelsea manager? Todd Boehly, Cristiano Ronaldo or bad performance?
Chelsea lost 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday, marking Tuchel's 100th and final game in command of the Blues. It has been reported that the 49-year-old Tuchel was informed of the decision on Wednesday morning
When Chelsea lost to Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday morning, they sacked Thomas Tuchel. That was the team's third defeat of the year.
At the start of the Premier League season, losses to Leeds and Southampton were followed by a 1-0 loss to Croatia in the Champions League for the Blues.
Last night, the 3-0 loss in Zagreb was the first time in Tuchel's tenure that his squad had dropped three consecutive matches away from home. The team is in sixth place with three victories after six games in the Premier League.
Todd Boehly and Cristiano Ronaldo's connection with Thomas Tuchel sacking
According to reports, new owner Todd Boehly and Tuchel's relationship deteriorated over the club's transfer plan, and ownership was also concerned about the team's poor performance to this point in the season.
Boehly's discussions on Cristiano Ronaldo with super agent Jorge Mendes disturbed him over the summer.
Tuchel also wanted Romelu Lukaku to stay until a replacement was found. Still, Boehly intervened to arrange a swift loan resolution with Inter Milan beforehand so the club could move on.
As the German had led Chelsea to the Champions League title just four months after arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2021, his dismissal came as a surprise.
And last season, under his leadership, they won the Club World Cup and advanced to the finals of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. However, the new proprietors took drastic action after the campaign's poor start.
As the club continues the search for Tuchel's replacement, the club's backroom staff will take over temporarily, potentially including Saturday's Premier League trip to Fulham.
Chelsea issues statement over Thomas Tuchel sacking
Chelsea thanked Tuchel for his service and stated that no comments would be made until a new head coach was appointed.
"On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club… As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition."
"There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made."
How are players affected by the shocking move?
The Blues took a chance by signing Aubameyang, but Tuchel and Aubameyang had developed a solid working connection during their time together at Borussia Dortmund.
However, the player's demeanour may be questioned by the new coach. Furthermore, he might not reach the top he had hoped for.
Thiago Silva is another star who may feel the effects of a new coach. This month, the centre-back will turn 38; thus, his time at the top of the game is winding down.
Since Cesar Azpilicueta is no longer a first-stringer, he will likely see less playing time.
While that's happening, Gallagher could take over the No. 8 position and get his career going at Stamford Bridge with the help of a new coach.
However, under Tuchel's successor, players like Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech may be given more playing time.
After replacing Frank Lampard in January 2021, Chelsea won their second Champions League title under Tuchel's leadership in May of that same year.
To replace Tuchel, Chelsea reportedly has their sights set on Brighton's Graham Potter, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, and former Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane.
