DC United coach Wayne Rooney is looking to sign former Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard following his release by Nottingham Forest, according to reports.

Jesse Lingard is set to reunite with former Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney at DC United this summer, according to reports.

The 30-year-old joined Forest on a free transfer last July, signing a one-year contract.

But he is now without a club after leaving Forest following an underwhelming season at the City Ground which saw Lingard make 12 Premier League appearances without scoring.

Lingard wrote on Instagram: "Thank you to everybody @officialnffc from the fans to all the back room staff and of course the players, been a rollercoaster journey but we stuck together through thick and thin and achieved our goal, it's been a pleasure #demmander #fordes #wakawaka."

He did score two goals in two Carabao Cup appearances, but struggled to find the form he discovered in a loan spell with West Ham, where he netted nine goals in 16 games.

Lingard is not the only player heading for the Forest exit door this summer, with Jack Colback, Jordan Smith, Andre Ayew, Lyle Taylor and Cafu also to depart.

But he is the one player most likely to be heading Stateside, with MLS betting writer George Dempsey saying: "He told TalkSport in January that he wants to finish his career in MLS."

Former United and England striker Rooney is now head coach at DC United, who have improved following the capture of midfielders Lewis O'Brien and Mateusz Klich.

Rooney sees Lingard as someone who can lift their attacking play, with DC United having only scored 25 goals in 18 MLS games so far this season.

As per league rules, DC United have utilised the three allotted designated player slots, which allows a club to sign expensive players without it counting against their budget.

However, Lingard could be registered as an international player should he agree to a considerable drop in wages.

DC United are currently eighth in the table after winning six games, drawing five and losing seven.
