UEFA Nations League: France 0-1 Croatia; Luka Modric's penalty sinks France
France, the winner of the Nations League in 2021, has exited the tournament from the group stage. They were at the bottom of Group A1 on two points with two games remaining
Luka Modric's penalty in the fifth minute became the reason behind Croatia's win at the Stade de France. It was France's second defeat in four games, and Croatia, in the meantime, has climbed to the second spot and is trailing Denmark by two points. Denmark's win against Austria sent home the holders from the competition, and they remained susceptible to being relegated.
Modric's goal was initiated by Karim Benzema clearing a corner, but Ibrahima Konate dropped a foul on Josip Brekalo, eliciting a penalty from the referee. Croatia had found momentum, so the first half ended in their favour. France tried to turn the score after the break, but Croatian defenders charged in electrifying unity. Although France dominated the possession, they couldn't create chances. Being reigning champions of the World Cup and Nations League, it came as a blow to France, the team that visibly struggled in the match.
Luka Modric: Difference between the two sides
The midfield two included Matteo Guendouzi and Boubacar Kamara pitted against Croatia's three of Marcelo Brozovic, Luka Modric, and Mateo Kovacic. The man of the match went to Luka Modric, and Croatia applauded their team effort. However, Modric inspired his side's exciting victory due to his ability to pass and the momentum he created in midfield. Croatia's win ended France's record of 23 matches in which they'd netted at least once (51 in total), which became the longest recorded time for the French. They had consistently scored since their friendly against Finland, losing 0-2 on November 11, 2020.
Didier Deschamps' revealed that June has been difficult for his side regarding results. They lacked the energy and the strength to tackle teams stronger than them. After the hard-hitting loss, they have lost a bit of self-confidence along the way, although the main reason, he disclosed, was their lack of freshness. Denmark and Croatia are in the top two now that France is out. The final two games will take place in September, with France facing a threat of relegation to League B.
