Tottenham and Newcastle are reportedly embroiled in a battle to sign Leicester City and England duo James Maddison and Harvey Barnes, with Spurs believed to be in pole position for their signatures.

Tottenham are reportedly set to gazump Newcastle for Leicester City duo James Maddison and Harvey Barnes.

With Leicester having been relegated from the Premier League, the mass exodus has already begun. Already seven players have been released including Daniel Amartey, Cayancar Socuglu, Nampalys Mendy, Youri Tielemans, Ryan Bertrand, Ayoze Peres and Tete.

It is public knowledge that Newcastle wanted Maddison in the January transfer window but failed to get their man. It is now being reported that Tottenham, under the new management of Mauricio Pochettino, have assumed frontrunner status for the England international's signature.

The Foxes are likely to cash in on the 25-year-old, who has one year left on his contract at the expiration of which he is likely to leave on a free transfer, meaning the club would miss out on a sizable profit.

Meanwhile, Barnes' contract expires in 2025 and his performances have reportedly put a number of big teams on high alert. Apart from Arsenal's Martin Odegaard, Barnes scored the most goals of any midfielder in the Premier League - 13.

Barnes has been capped once by the Three Lions in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales in October, 2020. Maddison has three appearances for the national side but probably would have had a lot more were it not for bad luck with injuries. However, he remains very much at the forefront of England manager Gareth Southgate, who gave Maddison his first start in a European Championships qualifier against Ukraine in March.
