FC Bayern Munich's coach, Thomas Tuchel, showered praise on the unexpected midfield combination of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka, in the wake of their commanding 4-0 Bundesliga triumph against Werder Bremen on Friday evening.

The Bayern goals came via a Leroy Sane brace, while Harry Kane and Mathys Tel also scored.

Having steadfastly adhered to the midfield partnership of Kimmich and Konrad Laimer during the pre-season, Tuchel sprang a tactical surprise by reuniting the seasoned duo of German national team midfielders Kimmich and Goretzka in the season opener against Bremen.

This once inseparable pair had featured together far less frequently over the past year, partly due to their individual efforts to enhance their offensive capabilities. Goretzka, in particular, had faced questions about his form and was even linked with a potential departure during the off-season.

The pair encountered their fair share of challenges during the season opener, prompting Tuchel to introduce Laimer in the 79th minute. Interestingly, two of Bayern's four goals were netted after this tactical switch.

Nevertheless, Tuchel was full of admiration for the partnership in his post-match remarks. While conceding that at times the play was "sloppy" and there's room for improvement, he seemed to endorse maintaining this midfield alliance.

"The hallmark of our midfielders is their incessant movement, frequent involvement with the ball, and deft touches," Tuchel conveyed to German broadcaster DAZN on Friday night.

"The dynamics of the game pivot around these central midfielders. We still need to fine-tune our coordination. But, tonight, the two of them supported each other admirably."
