Real Madrid's Ferland Mendy faces 'make or break' La Liga season amid injury woes
Real Madrid's La Liga campaign has kicked off with a relatively stable starting lineup, but the midfield department is experiencing intense competition.
However, one player's future remains uncertain.
Ferland Mendy, the French left-back, has yet to make an appearance this season due to recurring injuries, leading to speculation that his time at the club may be running out. Despite Fran Garcia stepping in admirably during Mendy's absence, doubts linger over Mendy's offensive impact and availability.
Since his €48 million transfer from Olympique Lyon in 2019, Mendy has suffered from a staggering 12 injuries. Last season, he managed just over 2,000 minutes, missing 23 matches and a total of 59 games due to injury since his arrival. Crucially, Mendy was unavailable for pivotal matches in the Copa del Rey, Champions League, and La Liga.
Diario AS reports that Mendy is aware of his potential expendability in the transfer market, with rumours linking Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies to Real Madrid. With two years left on his contract, next summer represents the last opportunity for Real Madrid to secure a fee for Mendy should they choose to sell him.
Mendy's future at the club now hinges on his ability to reverse this trend. Consistency in performance and fitness may persuade club president Florentino Perez, who has become increasingly cautious with spending on non-differential players.
Mendy faces a crucial season ahead, where he must prove his worth and secure his long-term future with the club.
