Karim Benzema places Real Madrid on the top of the table
Celta Vigo started ramping up the pressure on Real Madrid with their fans supporting the team. However, the game was won by Real Madrid, who drew the first blood when Karim Benzema scored from the penalty kick.
Celta Vigo took the game to the top of the league and was thwarted by a rash defensive move within their territory and some borderline calls made by the referee.
A third goal that led to Karim Benzema's 70th-minute goal was triggered by an unconfirmed foul after Ferland Mendy stumbled over the leg of Kevin Vazquez. Celta Vigo also had a goal disallowed during the first period following a video review.
Carlo Ancelotti's squad put an end to Celta Vigo's unbeaten streak of six games in the home of La Liga. They haven't been defeated in Baladios since December.
Karim Benzema creates history against Celta Vigo
Karim Benzema is only the second player in history to win two penalties and then miss another one in a La Liga game since 1951. The last time a team scored three penalties away during La Liga was in 1996.
He recorded 34 goals with Real Madrid in all competitions this season, making it the most successful scoring season for a club in his career.
He was equal to Alfredo di Stefano with 216 goals in the record of Real Madrid of top La Liga goalscorers, behind only Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo's 311 goals and Raul's total of 228 goals.
