Real Madrid extends its lead in La Liga. Can Barcelona, still have a chance?
Real Madrid won against Getafe 2-0 in a La Liga match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on April 10, 2022. They secured their position at the first spot in the race for the La Liga title with a 12 point lead ahead of runners up Sevilla and 15 points clear of Barcelona.
Real Madrid successfully broke past the stubborn Getafe defence to emerge as victors. Casemiro in the 38th minute and Lucas Vazquez in the 68th minute were the goal scorers for Real Madrid, while none of the players from Getafe was able to score.
Real Madrid was in control of the ball from the beginning with 69% possession but struggled to get past Getafe’s five-men wall of defence. They finally got the breakthrough in the 38th minute when Vinicius Jr fired a long cross from the left-wing toward Casemiro at the far post, who managed to convert the demanding opportunity into a goal. They doubled their lead in the 68th minute when Lucas Vazquez, after a back and forth of passes with Rodrygo, sent the ball into the far corner of the goal with his weaker left foot.
Getafe failed to take even one shot on the target compared to eight by Real Madrid. They are now just four points away from the relegation zone.
After the match, Real Madrid captain, Marcelo Vieira said "It wasn't easy, we made it look easy, we ran a lot and played hard until the end. Everyone in the locker room needs to feel important, it was nice to see some of us who don't have many minutes to enjoy themselves in front of our fans. We all have to be ready if needed at the end of the season."
Can Barcelona, in theory, still have a chance to win the La Liga title?
Barcelona had a tough start to the season. They fell to the ninth spot on the table in October 2021 under Ronald Koeman. The following month, he was sacked and replaced by Xavi.
Owing to Xavi’s shrewd management, Barcelona has risen back to claim a Champions League spot at the third position. However, they are still 15 points behind Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title.
Real Madrid has 72 points scored in 31 games, while Barcelona has scored 57 points in 29 games.
If Barcelona wins the next two La Liga matches, they can take the second spot from Seville and narrow Real Madrid’s lead to nine points.
If this happens, Barcelona will theoretically and mathematically have a chance to win the La Liga title.
Barcelona will have to win four more matches than Real Madrid to claim the top spot. This scenario will only be possible if Real Madrid loses at least four of their seven leftover matches.
