Real Madrid clinched 35th Spanish Title with win over Espanyol
Real Madrid clinched their 35th Spanish title with a 4-0 win at home to Espanyol, marking Carlo Ancelotti's fifth major European league win.
He becomes the first coach to ever win all five major European leagues besides Madrid winning the title in front of their fans for the first time since 2007. Ancelotti won the Scudetto with AC Milan in 2003-04, followed by a league win with Chelsea in 2009-10. In 2012-13 he secured Ligue 1 with Paris Saint Germain, and in 2016-17 he reigned as a Bundesliga champion at Bayern Munich.
"When the top tennis players get matchpoint they don't fail," Ancelotti had said before the game, and Madrid lived up to his expectations. Ancelotti didn't include Karim Benzema and Vinicius in his starting lineup. Toni Kroos, Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal were also benched, but Luca Modric started with Casemiro positioned at the centre-back. After missing their first chance in 13 minutes, Rodrygo took a shot past Diego Lopez at 33 minutes and touched the net. He doubled the score before halftime marking his fourth goal in the last five games.
Marco Asensio made it 3-0 in 55 minutes when Eduardo Camavinga passed a brilliant assist. Isco almost scored another goal, but Rodrygo was offside when the midfielder struck Benzema's assist past Lopez, so the goal was ruled out. With 10 minutes remaining, Vinicius formed a last-minute partnership with Benzema, who then scored his 42nd goal in 42 games. Their latest win is trophy number 21 for Benzema, who will be needed in the starting lineup on Wednesday as Madrid takes on Manchester City. Finally, it's celebration time in the Spanish capital as fans prepare for a wild night. However, they will soon have to gear up for the upcoming showdown against Manchester City, which currently leads the aggregate 4-3.
