Real Madrid beats Manchester City 3-1 to reach the Champions League final, scores twice in the extra time
Real Madrid defeated Manchester City 3-1 in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on May 5, 2022.
The win helped Real Madrid secure a place in the Champions League final with an aggregate 6-5 aggregate victory over Manchester City. After a 4-3 loss in the first leg of the semi-final, Real Madrid put forth a brilliant display at their home ground. They pulled off an unbelievable turnaround in the ending minutes of the game after a goal by Riyad Mahrez in the 73rd minute gave Manchester City a 5-3 aggregate lead.
Real Madrid has entered the Champions League finals after three seasons, with their last event against Liverpool in 2018, where they triumphed 3-1.
Rodrygo in the 90th minute and the third minute of extended time and Karim Benzema in the 95th minute were the goal scorers for Real Madrid. In contrast, Riyad Mahrez, in the 73rd minute, was the sole goalscorer for Manchester City.
The English giants gained a 1-0 lead over Real Madrid in the 73rd minute, which made an aggregate victory look like a surety for City. However, Real Madrid bounced back with just one minute left on the clock. Karim Benzema steered a cross from Eduardo Camavinga to Rodrygo, who reacted ahead of Edison Cavani to send the ball into the goal, giving a glimmer of hope to Real Madrid. One minute later, Rodrygo netted again and levelled the aggregate with a shot into the top left corner of the net after receiving a well-placed pass from Marco Asensio.
Manchester City faltered with the victory almost in their grasp, and the match was sent into extra time. The tensions were running high as Real Madrid got a penalty in the 95th minute. Karim Benzema made no mistake and sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with a powerful, low-level shot, giving Real Madrid the lead.
The English giants failed to recover after a surprising comeback by Real Madrid, and the match ended with a 6-5 aggregate victory for Real Madrid.
After making thrilling comebacks against Paris St Germain and Chelsea, Real Madrid prevailed once again.
After the match, the manager of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, commented, "We were close. But in the end, we could not reach it. We didn't play our best, but it is expected, a semi-final, the players feel the pressure and want to do it. Football is unpredictable. It is a game like this. We have to accept it."
Real Madrid will face Liverpool in the final match to be held at Stade de France on May 29.
