Premier League : VAR denies goal to Everton as derby match with Liverpool ends in a goalless draw
Everton's second-half winner was disallowed after a sensational VAR review leading to a 0-0 draw as Merseyside rivals Liverpool failed to improve their lackluster run in the Premier League
Everton's Tom Davies was denied in the first half, followed by Darwin Nunez and Luiz Diaz's failure to score. After the break, Jordan Pickford made a few attempts to net and Neal Maupay, who made his Everton debut, struck from close range.
Conor Coady then converted at the far post the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR cross-examination. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker blocked Everton substitute Dwight McNeil's shot, and Mohamed Salah's shot met the post.
Liverpool is now in the fifth position, six points behind Arsenal before their clash against Manchester United on Sunday. Everton is ranked 14th and has failed to win a match so far.
Roberto Firmino was pumped up in the second half, but Pickford made three saves with brief intervals to deny the forward. Neil Maupay struck the ball near Alisson, which almost became the match's first goal in the 69th minute.
Conor Coady was the second Everton man to create another chance, but the goal was ruled offside in a tough call. The result implies that Everton matches against Liverpool have witnessed more goalless draws than any other clash in English top-flight history and Premier League history.
"Wow, what can you do? It was a great derby, super intense, with a lot of really spectacular saves," Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp remarked.
"We hit the post three times and Pickford made so many saves. I don't know how many derbies I've been in, but it's quite a few and they're always difficult here," he added.
Pickford made a string of saves to keep Liverpool at bay, none better than the last in stoppage time when he tipped Mohamed Salah's shot onto the post.
Alisson was also in excellent form at the other end, making key saves to deny Everton debutant Neal Maupay and Dwight McNeil. Still, Pickford was the star of the show as he frustrated a Liverpool side who have now dropped nine points from their opening six matches.
