Premier League: Spurs celebrate thrilling 2-0 win against Everton
Tottenham Hotspur found a chance to beat lurking stress with a much-needed win over Everton. The mid-table team avoided the relegation zone through strong defence early this season
Antonio Conte changed his approach to the team by switching more often. Both wingbacks and the left centre-back were replaced before the midweek Champions League match.
Tottenham ramped up their attack in the early minutes, and Everton was thriving on a back-five formation. Skipper Harry Kane made his first attempt, but his header was blocked.
Richarlison made the next attempt from a cross from Perisic, but his attempt jumped over the crossbar. The Tottenham wide centre-backs made routine passes to the wingbacks and Eric Dier.
In a few instances, they moved forward in wide areas characterised by half-chances. However, a conversion looked improbable. Despite winning the first free-kick, the Spurs met counter-attacks by the opposition.
Everton's right flank cleared the path for Demarai Gray and his passes with Rodrigo Bentancur. Gray's attempt leapt high over the crossbar before Bentancur was falsely charged with a yellow card later.
The Toffees could have capitalised on the communication gap between Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Unfortunately, Amadou Onana burst into Spur's penalty box with a high shot.
Tottenham put more energy into their game, and Spurs found another chance. Harry Kane sent a ball to Richarlison on the penalty spot, and the next shot went over the bar.
Richarlison's exit alarming for the Spurs
Early into the second half, Richarlison pulled out due to a calf injury. Conte discarded the 3-4-3 shape and brought in Yves Bissouma for Lucas Moura.
The new 3-5-2 side then increased their prospects of scoring. Ben Davies' pass to Harry Kane elicited a volley caught by Jordan Pickford.
Everton's second yellow card arrived as Hojbjerg became a subject to Idrissa Gana Gueye's aggression. Son tried to convert Perisic's cross, but Pickford reclaimed possession.
Spurs finally cracked into the Everton defence when Jordan Pickford dropped a Matt Doherty shot on goal and fouled Harry Kane, who then converted through a penalty awarded to the Spurs.
Kane found another chance from the top of the box, but he couldn't get past Pickford this time. The match progressed into extensive passes between the Tottenham boys before they sealed a victory with another thrilling goal.
Kane played with a long ball and darted towards the penalty box. He dropped a cross to Hojbjerg, who received the pass and slotted in, giving another boost to Conte's side.
Oliver Skipp, Djed Spence, and Lucas Moura made late entries, but it didn't initiate a change in the scoreline as Tottenham grabbed all three points.
