Premier League News: Liverpool duo's future in doubt, and Reece James signs a new Chelsea contract
Reece James has signed a new contract with Chelsea, which binds him to the club until 2028. The prolific right-back is to become the highest-paid defender in the club's history
According to the deal, he will earn £ 250,000 a week. The Englishman joined Chelsea's academy at age six before rising through the ranks.
After a short stint at Fulham, his debut in Chelsea took place in September 2019 in the League Cup. James has sealed his spot as a regular feature in Thomas Tuchel's side, a Champions League winner and a strong force in England's National team.
About his extension, James said, "I am over the moon with my new contract and I'm thankful for the fans, the new ownership and everyone involved in the club. I cannot wait to see what the future holds, and I am sure we will have the chance of winning many trophies."
He further stated his allegiance to the club where he spent his childhood and reassured fans that the club has a bright future ahead. The Blues were keen on shielding James from clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester City, who are eyeing his progress at Stamford Bridge.
Chairman Todd Boehly is thrilled at the prospect of having James in the club. "He is an outstanding player and a true Chelsea man, and we are all looking forward to watching him continue to flourish at Stamford Bridge," remarked Boehly.
Liverpool duo's future in doubt: Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are out of the Champions League squad
Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain might depart Liverpool after being omitted from Jurgen Klopp's Champions League squad. The Reds will kickstart their campaign on Wednesday night against Serie A side Napoli.
Two notable names were missing from the squad named Klopp on Sunday. It means that they cannot compete against Napoli or in the rest of the group stage.
Liverpool can still register the pair in January 2023 if the club decides to change its decision. Keita has been pursued by many clubs this summer, but Liverpool was intent on keeping him.
They had roped him in for £53million, and Oxlade-Chamberlain was bought for £35million. Keita was a raging box-to-box midfielder in Europe with RB Leipzig, while Oxlade-Chamberlain showed progress in Arsenal.
They are out of their Liverpool contracts next summer, so the departure seems likely. Injuries have plagued their performances, but the situation has not impacted games even though they were unfit to compete.
How serious are the injuries?
As Klopp stated, both midfielders are sustaining long-term issues that will keep them off the field for "a while", as Klopp said. If they failed to recover before the end of the group stages, registering them would not be wise.
As the World Cup in Qatar will keep the football calendar busy, the Champions League knockout stages will not occur this year despite the group stages closing on November 2, 2022.
So Liverpool will think twice before registering Oxlade-Chamberlain and Keita, who might not recover this year.
