Premier League: Chelsea wins 2-1 against West Ham as Kai Havertz nets a controversial goal
Kai Havertz netted a late winner as Chelsea bounced back from a goal behind to win 2-1 against West Ham
Blues have poured 250 million pounds ($280million) in exchange for new signings, the team are expected to deliver.
However, the Blues have suffered shocking defeats against Leeds and Southampton. Michail Antonio scored for West Ham in the 62nd minute, weakening Chelsea's defence and determination.
Ben Chilwell equalised 76 minutes into the game after the England left-back came in place of Marc Cucurella. Chilwell responded to Thiago Silva's assist and sent the ball past Lukasz Fabianski.
Kai Havertz then converted Chilwell's cross to provide Chelsea with their second goal in the 88th minute. Maxwel Cornet almost equalised in stoppage-time, but VAR called off the plan for Jarrod Bowen's foul on Mendy.
Thomas Tuchel's side has now climbed to fifth place after securing their third win in six games, while West Ham boss David Moyes was outraged at the seeming unfair ruling the officials gave.
Although the credibility of VAR's decision has been questioned, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel supported the verdict. "It obviously went in our favour. There is a reason I think it went in our favour. It's my opinion, and I don't know if everyone shares the opinion that it's very clear it's a foul," said the Blues manager.
West Ham boss Moyes was not happy with the decision and gave the officials an earful after the full-time whistle.
"You have seen it, it is a scandalous decision, absolutely rotten from one of the supposedly elite referees – it doesn't say much about whoever sent him over from VAR as well – it is an unbelievable decision against us," Moyes said.
"We feel we got back to 2-2, and it was not down to anything we have done.
"I support a lot of the VAR stuff; I think the goalkeeper dives; he is faking an injury because he cannot get to the next one – he did the same on the first goal as well.
"The referee somehow gets that so wrong it is incredible."
David Moyes is not alone in thinking it was a wrong decision.
Glenn Murray: "Those are the decisions that make managers go grey.
"I feel as though Edouard Mendy has bought that from the referee.
"Jarrod Bowen catches Mendy ever so slightly, I think he realises he's palmed it straight to a West Ham player and has stayed down."
Alan Shearer: "Awful decision."
Danny Murphy: "I don't think I have any words I can say aloud [about the decision to rule out West Ham's equaliser]. It was a ridiculous decision – I can't find any logic in it.
