Premier League: Arsenal prevail over Liverpool in a thrilling match, but the clash leads to an investigation by the Football Association
Sunday at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League standings with a critical 3-2 victory over Liverpool to maintain their scorching start
Gabriel Martinelli gave the home team the lead after 58 seconds of play in a tremendously riveting match.
His goal was the quickest league goal scored by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium since October 2011. The goal also represented the tenth time in the previous 12 league encounters that the Reds have conceded first.
Liverpool's improved effort was rewarded 11 minutes before halftime when Darwin Nunez scored his second league goal of the season. Initially, the hosts appeared to be in control of the contest, but Liverpool began to assert themselves midway through the opening half.
Saka chipped in at the far post to give Arsenal their second lead of the day only seconds before halftime after Martinelli led a swift counterattack. Gabriel's dummy for Saka made up for the defender's previous blunder.
Roberto Firmino, this time in the 53rd minute, levelled the score for Liverpool as the Reds retook control of the game early in the second half.
Michael Oliver determined that Gabriel Jesus was fouled in the penalty area, and Arsenal was awarded a spot-kick due to their perseverance. Saka calmly converted from the penalty spot in the 76th minute for his second goal of the match and Arsenal's third advantage.
The Football Association to investigate the Arsenal- Liverpool scuffle
After referee Michael Oliver awarded Arsenal a late penalty, which Bukayo Saka scored to give the home team a 3-2 win, players from both teams got into a fight. As tensions rose during the remainder of the game, Oliver went to the sidelines to speak with Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp.
The FA will consult with the referees before deciding whether to launch a full-scale probe.
The FA stated, "We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool. We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident."
During the incident, players from both teams had to be separated, and it is thought that Oliver informed both managers about insults made by one player to another. When Andy Madley, the fourth law enforcement officer, arrived, Oliver chatted with him, and the two exchanged notes.
Leaving the controversy aside, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was overjoyed with the Gunners' performance. "Thank you so much to the boys and our supporters for experiencing an afternoon like this… It's why we are here, and I really enjoyed it, especially the way we won."
"I've never seen it like this. You cannot imagine how much it helps the players and how much belief and confidence, how much support… it's one of the nicest things we've done since we've been together here - to unite everybody and feel like you go here and you're going to have some experience. It's great."
Arsenal's victory over Liverpool was only their second in the last 15 Premier League encounters between the two teams. For the first time since 2010, Jurgen Klopp's squad has started a season without a win in any of their first four away league fixtures.
Arsenal is now the Premier League's top team, surpassing Manchester City.
