Pascal Struijk header keeps Leeds United safe from the relegation zone
Leeds United won a crucial 1-1 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion in stoppage time, thanks to substitute Pascal Struijk's header, to move out of the Premier League relegation zone
After Burnley's defeat by Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Leeds United knew they could surpass their relegation rivals out of the bottom three if they avoided defeat against Brighton.
Due to the loss of their Turf Moor rivals to Tottenham Hotspur in the lunchtime kick-off, Leeds United was able to climb above the dotted line and set a standard for the Clarets to follow or even surpass when they visit Aston Villa midweek.
Struijk's goal could save Leeds United's Premier League status next year. Jesse Marsch's team now has 35 points, one ahead of next weekend's final round. This is one point clear of Burnley (18th), who still have two games, while Brighton remains 10th.
Brighton & Hove Albion get off the mark early
Leeds United nearly got the perfect start when Joe Gelhardt shot the ball towards the goal, but his efforts failed after the ball passed by his teammate Liam Cooper on the line.
Once they were assured their highest-ever Premier League points return, the visitors quickly settled into the match, creating several openings and Solly March as their best early chance.
As the Premier League's second-worst defense was breached, it was clear that the pressure paid off.
Leeds United started badly in front of a raucous Elland Road. Danny Welbeck gave Brighton the lead at the 21-minute mark. He muscled Diego Llorente, Leeds United's defender, off the ball and scored a magnificent goal.
Robert Sanchez denies Leeds United early chances but sub-Pascal Struijk scores for a draw
The stadium was filled with frustration. Leeds nearly equaled through Mateusz Klich, but his near-post attempt was saved brilliantly by Robert Sanchez, Brighton's goalkeeper.
Brighton sat back and waited for Leeds United to pressure them in the second period. Raphinha scored a thunderous free-kick towards the goal, but Sanchez was at his best to block it.
Raphinha, Leeds United's most potent attacking threat, almost nudged one home at the back post, but his attempt was unsuccessful.
Although Leeds appeared to be headed for a fourth consecutive loss, substitute Struijk made an unexpected appearance at the back to score a draw in the 92nd minute. It prompted wild celebrations from staff, players, and fans.
Leeds United sits a point higher than the bottom three, with only a trip to Brentford remaining, while Burnley has fallen to the 18th with a significantly better goal difference.
Burnley has two remaining matches, Leeds United has one, while Everton has two more points and three remaining games.
