Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shine as Barcelona tightens their grip on the second position
Barcelona secured their second place in LaLiga after a 3-1 win over Celta Vigo at Camp Nou.The match was still entertaining, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading Barcelona to a 3-1 win over a 10-man Celta Vigo
Aubameyang again proved to be a worthy January addition while scoring twice in each half to increase his LaLiga total to 11.
Ousmane Dembele also put on another impressive performance. He tore apart Celta Vigo's left side and helped the hosts find the back of their net with Memphis Depay in the first three shots on target.
Then, he set up Aubameyang's second goal with a similar assist.
Celta Vigo unable to capitalize on chances as Barcelona clinches third straight victory
Ricard Puig came off the bench to replace Ferran Torres at half-time, scoring one of his goals, but it was disallowed after being ruled an offside.
Celta Vigo, who finished with more shots on goal than their hosts, scored after Barcelona had made it 3-0 when Iago Aspas took advantage of a poor pass by the opposition's goalkeeper.
Celta Vigo's consolation goal came after Marc-André ter Stegen mishandled a pass inside his box and gifted the ball to Aspas, who had an empty net at his disposal.
However, it would reduce them to 10 men after a red card was issued for Jeison Murillo in the 58th minute.
Barcelona's Ronald Araujo taken to hospital following Gavi clash
Ronald Araujo, Barcelona's defender, had to be taken to the hospital after suffering from a concussion in the league game against Celta Vigo.
The game was paused for several minutes in the second half after the 23-year-old Araujo suffered from an injury following a clash of heads with his 17-year-old teammate Gavi.
Araujo managed to continue running, even though the pair collided in midair. However, after jogging back to his defensive posture, Araujo fell to the ground in scary scenes.
The play was stopped for eight minutes while the defender was treated on the pitch and then moved to an ambulance.
Eric Garcia, nearest the defender after his fall, placed him in the recovery position.
Later, Barcelona announced that the defender had sustained a concussion. He was then taken to the hospital for further testing.
Gavi continued playing despite being in the collision, and Clement Lenglet took Araujo's place.
Next week, Xavi will face a selection headache against Getafe as Araujo is unlikely to be there. The three of Frenkie de Jong, Eric Garcia and Jordi Albion received yellow cards that will trigger a suspension for the next match.
Despite having played more games, Barcelona is now seven points clear of Sevilla in third place.
Securing second place in the LaLiga would guarantee a spot in the highly lucrative Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia for Barcelona.
Barcelona has already secured a place in the top four that keeps them in the Champions League next season and is only behind Real Madrid, crowned champions. In comparison, Celta Vigo is currently in 11th position in the mid-table.
