Nottingham Forest promoted to Premier League, ending a 23-year absence

Nottingham Forest cracked into the Premier League for the first time in 23 years following a 1-0 win against Huddersfield in the Championship play-off final on Sunday

The promotion is credited to the on-loan Chelsea defender Levi Colwill's blunderous own goal at the end of the first half at Wembley. The transition will be worth £170 million ($214 million). Their entry into the top flight has overwhelmed the fans more than the financial gain. Forest can now host the Premier League's elite at their City Ground stadium on the banks of the River Trent, an event we haven't witnessed in the 21st century.

Forest boss Cooper is pushing his team towards success

The victory is also a monumental achievement for Welsh manager Steve Cooper, who replaced Chris Hughton in September. His side had hit bottom due to a single point score in their first seven games, but the team resurfaced after losing to Swansea and impressed during last year's Championship play-off final against Brentford. Cooper did not lose heart despite losing their one chance at securing an automatic promotion in their penultimate season game. The team ranked fourth, then beat Sheffield United on penalties in the play-off semi-final before thrashing Huddersfield. Taking its revival seriously, the team had defeated Arsenal and Leicester in this season's FA Cup before being decimated by Liverpool 0-1.

Forest was thriving under iconic boss Brian Clough who helped them win the English title in 1978 and the European Cup in 1979 and 1980. His retirement in 1993 marked the end of an era, and Forest experienced a steady decline in their performance, leading to a three-season spell in the third tier. Forest stopped visiting Wembley after Clough's exit, and their last match saw them enter the stadium for the first time since 1992.

Huddersfield frustrated after being denied two penalties

Huddersfield could find their pace, and as Sorba Thomas' cross-shot couldn't edge past Forest keeper Brice Samba. Their winning moment was initiated by on-loan Manchester United midfielder Garner in the 43rd minute. He released a powerful cross into the Huddersfield area, and Colwill deflected it into his net to reach the ball before Yates. Although Huddersfield sped up the game, Jonathan Hogg's header failed to touch the back of the net.

Huddersfield looked disheartened after failing to materialise a penalty claim in the 73rd minute. Jack Colback fouled Harry Toffolo, but referee Jon Moss dismissed their claims, and VAR refused to overturn the decision. Huddersfield was shocked when another penalty appeal was shunned after Max Lowe tackled Lewis O'Brien. Forest was tensed when Samba walked off due to an injury in the final minutes, but they held on to their hopes until the last minute and won the match.
