News: Pep Paris and Pochettino in the summer of 2023
Paris Saint-Germain will reportedly continue with manager Mauricio Pochettino for one more year before hiring Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola
Pochettino was linked to Manchester United, but the Premier League team chose Erik Ten Hag instead. The Argentinian will now work with the Paris-based club for another year.
After another disappointing Champions League campaign, which saw them lose out to the round of 16, there was doubt if he would be continuing with the French giants.
A 3-1 defeat at the Bernabeu saw Paris Saint-Germain eliminated despite leading Real Madrid 1-0 after the first leg. At the end of the campaign, it was expected that the club's owners would sack the former Tottenham boss.
As one would expect from the super-rich club, he won the Ligue 1 title. But, it remains to be seen if that is enough.
Reportedly, the club's forward Kylian Mbappé, whom they retained after a revised deal, now has the right to make decisions about all matters, including the firing and hiring managers.
L'Equipe, a French outlet, reported that Pochettino, the former Tottenham Hotspur boss, will work with PSG for another season, and in the meantime, they will try to get Guardiola to their side as soon as next year.
The Spaniard, Guardiola, will be released from his current club at the end of the next season. However, he is still negotiating new terms with the Premier League champions.
Pep has his reasons to stay in City
Since he arrived in Manchester in 2016, he has seen brilliant success, including five domestic cups and four Premier League titles.
However, he has yet to win the Champions League trophy for the club. He will likely sign a new contract with the club to help him achieve the European dream. The former Barcelona manager has yet to win Europe's top domestic prize, a burning ambition for him.
Next season it's back on the agenda as they'll have Erling Haaland in the ranks to boost their chances. The opportunity to continue his legacy in France could attract Guardiola, who has dominated in Spain and Germany. However, it is uncertain if that will happen anytime soon.
