Marc Guehi: Will Chelsea regret selling him?
Chelsea sold Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace in the English Premier League during the summer transfer window. When the news broke on Thursday that the Blues had agreed to sell Guehi to Crystal Palace for up to £20 million, it raised more than a few eyebrows.
A five-year contract is on the table, with a medical already completed, as well as a sell-on clause and matching rights on a future move - possibly Chelsea's saving grace in this position. The amount cited is astronomical for a man with no Premier League experience, but Guehi's potential is such that this might be a move the Blues will come to regret.
Marc Guehi joined Crystal Palace for £20 million and has already established himself as a valuable member of the team. After seeing Guehi in Crystal Palace's 3-1 victory over Watford in their preseason club-friendly game, some Chelsea fans wondered if his contract had a Buy-back clause.
Marc Guehi teamed up with his new club's other defenders to guarantee that the defence was tight and impenetrable. His presence at the center back definitely made it hard for Watford attackers to penetrate Crystal Palace's back line.
Last season, he was one of the greatest defenders in the Champions League, and with young, up-and-coming center-backs tough to discover and purchase, Chelsea's decision to give up on him looks ludicrous.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, on the other hand, claims he has no regrets over selling Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace last summer.
"For Marc, it's a tremendous development, and it's extremely difficult to predict what would've happened if we retained him," Tuchel said. "Perhaps he needed a change of scenery, a different club, a greater role, and more playing time to reach his full potential."
"It's a decision we made jointly, and we're satisfied with it," he continued. "I am pleased with my choices, and I believe they were the correct ones given the circumstances."
Marc Guehi was questioned if he was one of the top defenders in the Premier League before Crystal Palace's FA Cup semi-final match against Chelsea. In the pre-match press conference, he responded, "I'd say I'm extremely far away." "I'm not even close." Chelsea may have second thoughts about selling the center-back last summer because of his humble approach to his development.
Many Blues fans still can't understand how their club could sell Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, and Romelu Lukaku only for them to go on to become European stars.
De Bruyne and Salah never returned to Chelsea, but Lukaku returned after winning the Scudetto with Inter for a club-record £100 million fee.
Those three athletes, like Guehi, had a humble, hard-working attitude. His manager appreciated his response about being a long way from the top, but he believes he will get there one day.
