Manchester United News Erik Ten Hag wants to sack Harry Maguire
Erik ten Hag now has three options for choosing Manchester United's next captain if Harry Maguire relinquishes his captaincy
His declining form has demanded a rebuild in the team's structure; as a result, he might even lose his position in the starting line-up. One of the three names is Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who has decided, while David de Gea and Bruno Fernandes are confirmed as the other two.
However, ten Hag might refrain from making a big decision early into his managerial tenure. Ronaldo's second spell at Old Trafford started this season, and the experienced star helped many United youngsters to find their place within the club. Ronaldo happily took responsibility for being a senior member of the squad and has indicated to Ten Hag that he would captain if the United boss decides to change the captaincy.
Carragher urges Ten Hag to offload Ronaldo in the first act at United
On the other hand, Ronaldo's stay at Old Trafford is not approved by Jamie Carragher, who has advised boss Erik Ten Hag to axe Cristiano Ronaldo. In rebuilding the Red Devils squad, Ten Hag is being told by fans and pundits to let go of the Portuguese after one season back at the club. Despite being chastised by fans, he secured 18 goals in the Premier League and was in contention for the golden boot. Liverpool defender Carragher happens to be one of Ronaldo's most prominent critics who has urged Ten Hag to offload Ronaldo and make a statement to the squad.
"I'm thinking of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp right now. When Pep came into Manchester City, he just went, 'Joe Hart, no.' And everyone was like, wow, this England's keeper he's been a great player for City, but it was like 'No, you're not here." He further continued, "When Klopp came into Liverpool, they had brought in players under Brendan Rodgers that summer, I think [Christian] Benteke cost £35-40million, he was a few quid but Klopp said, 'You're not for me, out.' It was like making that big bold decision straight away that makes everyone sit up and take note."
Similarly, Carragher believes that something similar awaits United. He said, "I'm convinced that Ten Hag has got to do it with Ronaldo, whether he's allowed to or not. I've said this consitently throughout this season: that was not a good signing. Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of all time and I'm seen as a guy who's criticising Ronaldo." According to Carragher, Ronaldo's torrid second spell at the club could ruin his reputation as a player. Moreover, the club can't enter next season with a centre-forward who will be 38, even if he scored goals.
