Manchester United news: Bruno Fernandes close to signing new deal at Old Trafford
Reports in Portugal suggest that midfielder Bruno Fernandes is close to signing a new deal at Manchester United.
Fernandes joined the Old Trafford club in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon and proved to be highly influential under the management of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
This resulted in United starting the process to draft a new deal based on his importance, but at the start of this year, talks between the club and the player’s representatives were put on hold.
They have been rekindled now though, with it being reported that Fernandes could double his pay to £240,000 per week as part of the new five-year contract being thrashed out.
His current deal is for five-and-a-half years with an option of another 12 months, so the new deal is more about improving his conditions than tying him down for a longer period of time.
His form has dipped this season under interim boss Ralf Rangnick, with the timing quite odd as United are currently undergoing a search for a new manager.
Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino are amongst the favourites but there is no guarantee whoever comes in will have Fernandes as part of their plans.
Furthermore, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata are all out of contract this summer, while Marcus Rashford's future is also up in air, suggesting that the future of Fernandes is not the biggest priority for the Old Trafford club.
