Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne defeats Salah to claim Premier League player of the year
Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne won the Premier League player of the year for the second time, brushing past Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, who is also in contention for the Golden Boot with 22 goals
Meanwhile, De Bruyne's teammate Phil Foden was awarded the Young Player of the Season award earlier on Saturday. Others in contention for the title include Joao Cancelo, Liverpool duo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son, West Ham's Jarrod Bowen, and Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka, and Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse. The Belgian international footballer surprised everyone, especially fans who expected Salah to win the award. Unluckily, the Egyptian's gameplay has not been at par in recent months, which could have caused his downfall.
Pep Guardiola's fierce team continues to impress
De Bruyne has previously won the award in the 2019-2020 season. In 2022, he became the fourth player to have won it on numerous occasions, following Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nemanja Vidic. Additionally, it is to be noted that all the awarded recipients in the last three seasons have been City players. Ruben Dias grabbed the title the previous year and de Bruyne the season prior. In a conversation with the official club website, the midfielder seemed proud of lifting the award for a second time.
Foden becomes the Young Player of the Season
It has been a terrific couple of years for Pep Guardiola's side Manchester City, who has won three times in the last four seasons. They were runners-up in the 2019-20 season, which the Red Devils clinched. Furthermore, this year, the Young Player of the Season went to De Bruyne's teammate Foden, who further stated, "I'm very proud to have won this award for the second season. There are so many talented young players in this season's Premier League and it's a real honour to win it again."
Leeds and Burnley threaten Everton with Legal Action
Leeds United and Burnley are reportedly taking legal measures against the Premier League and Everton because the Toffees are rumoured to have violated financial rules. Both the clubs sent letters to the Premier League last week about the current predicament that awaits Everton. The team has recorded losses totalling £371.8m over three years. In April, it was reported that the clubs were free to take legal action against Everton.
Leeds and Burnley face the danger of being relegated from the Premier League. At the same time, Everton was retained in the top-flight after Thursday's dramatic 3-2 showdown against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park. According to the rules, the clubs can record a maximum loss of £105million over three years and could have a point sanction if they cross that figure. Clubs can write off losses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, but Everton's figures have breached the confines of legality. In March, the club disclosed that £170million of their losses are attributed to the impact on the club of the Covid-19 pandemic.
