Manchester City News: Sergio Gomez is signing for £11 million in a 4-year deal
Sergio Gomez has signed a four-year contract with Manchester City after leaving Anderlecht. The outstanding defender will remain with Manchester City until the end of the 2025-26 season
The 21-year-old Spanish left-back is Manchester City's fourth summer acquisition after Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, and Stefan Ortega.
Pep Guardiola wants to keep former Spain youth international Oleksandr Zinchenko, so the Premier League champions sign a substitute.
After allowing Oleksandr Zinchenko to join Arsenal for £32 million ($38 million), the Premier League winners needed a full-back.
Sergio Gomez opens up after the Manchester City transfer
Sergio Gomez opened up on his transfer and said: "I am incredibly proud and happy to have joined Manchester City. City are the best team in England and in Pep Guardiola I have a chance to learn and develop under the most outstanding manager in world football."
"To be part of this club is a dream come true for me and something any young player would aspire to," Gomez said. "The number of trophies City have won over the past few years has been incredible, and the style of football the team plays under Pep is the most exciting in Europe. Playing for and being guided by Pep and his coaches will be very special.
"I've heard so much about the City fans and how passionate they are, so I can't wait to get started and to try and help the club achieve even more," he concluded.
Last Thursday, Manchester City agreed to terms with Anderlecht for Gomez for an initial cost of €13 million ($13.4 million) plus add-ons.
The Premier League champions initially saw the former Spain youth international as a development player. It was slated to join sister club Girona in the Spanish top division on loan.
However, Pep Guardiola has decided to keep a player who began his career as an offensive midfielder in Barcelona's La Masia Academy before moving on to Borussia Dortmund.
He spent two seasons on loan with Huesca before joining Anderlecht, where he excelled under former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, claiming 15 assists and being voted Player of the Year.
Manchester City has scouted Gomez extensively, and he is thought to be a high-potential development player.
Gomez will wear the 21 shirts, which were most recently worn by Ferran Torres but were most famously worn by club legend David Silva
Manchester City has been looking for a new left-back following the departure of Ukraine international Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal this summer.
Manchester City was interested in Marc Cucurella, but they were hesitant to match Brighton & Hove Albion's asking price for the 24-year-old, who has since joined Chelsea.
Gomez began his career with Barcelona and is a regular for Spain's Under-21 team, having scored four goals in five games. He can also play in the advanced midfield position.
