Liverpool star Mohamed Salah issues emotional statement after Champions League finals loss
Mohamed Salah has released an emotional statement after Liverpool's devastating Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid
After suffering a one-sided defeat in Paris this past weekend, the Merseyside club was left out of winning the Champions League.
Mohamed Salah is told he is willing to trade in all the individual awards he received this season to play the last weekend's Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid.
The Egypt international has won the playmaker of the season award and was awarded the league's golden boot for top scorer along with Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min.
The Football Writers' Association named him the men's football player of the season, and he also received the Professional Footballers Association's fans player of the year award.
Mohamed Salah wants to play the Champions League 2022 finals at the cost of his accolades
Salah commented that being " recognised by the fans and by the sports journalists in the same season is something special that I will never forget," Salah said on Twitter on Thursday.
"I would, however, give all those personal awards up for a chance at replaying that final, but that is not how football works. I cannot express in words how much we wanted to bring that trophy back to Liverpool, but in the end, we couldn't.
"It has been a very long season but a part of me wishes the next one starts again tomorrow."
Jurgen Klopp's team were beaten in Paris after Vinicius Junior's second-half strike ensured Real Madrid's 14th Champions League title.
Real Madrid goalkeeper was on top form and eventually picked his man-of-the-match prize with two stoppages of Sadio Mane, with Salah especially impressive.
The match was just the second in four decades that the Spanish giants beat Liverpool during the championship final after doing the same in Kyiv in the 2018 season.
The loss was of added significance since Liverpool also missed out in the race for an opportunity to win the Premier League title a week earlier when Manchester City came from two goals down to Aston Villa to grab the trophy.
Personally, Salah has enjoyed another excellent season and is currently the top scorer in his team in the Premier League in goals and assists.
Mohamed Salah's future at Liverpool remains questionable
However, his future is subject to intense scrutiny, despite confirming that he will be playing at Anfield the following season.
The Egyptian international's contract is due to expire in June 2023. Reports suggest that he might be transferred to a rival club of Liverpool should he not agree to an extension.
He's been in discussions with the team for over 12 months over the possibility of prolonging his stay. However, he hasn't yet signed an extension to his contract.
Since his return to England, Salah has had five successful and trophy-filled seasons at Liverpool.
He's scored 156 goals and has won the Premier League and Champions League and the domestic championships with Liverpool.
