Liverpool announces list of seven players to leave the club on a free transfer
Liverpool has confirmed that seven academy and senior players will be leaving the club after their contracts expire at June's end
Ben Woodburn, the club's youngest goal scorer, is one of those leaving as a free agent.
When he scored against Leeds United in November 2016, the Wales international was only 17 years and 45 days old. However, after suffering from injuries, his progress took a hit, and the 22-year-old spent the last season on loan at Hearts.
Striker Divock Origi will join AC Milan after his contract expires. Loris Karius is looking at various offers across Europe to jump-start his career.
Since his 2018 Champions League defeat by Real Madrid, the German goalkeeper has not made a competitive appearance with Liverpool.
After spending five seasons on loan at Fulham, Stade de Reims, Glasgow Rangers, Cardiff City and Millwall for the past five seasons, winger Sheyi Ojo is now looking for a new club.
What happens to the cult hero Divock Origi
Liverpool, on their official website, wrote parting comments for the man who secured cult hero status on the back of continental and derby day heroics, "Eight years after agreeing on a move to Anfield from Lille, Divock Origi will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of June.
"The striker began his Reds career in earnest in 2015 – having remained in France for a season-long loan with Lille – and would go on to be involved in some of the most iconic and important moments in the club's modern history."
"There was Origi's collection of Merseyside derby goals, six in total, including the 96th-minute Kop-end winner of December 2018 and, fittingly, his final strike for Liverpool to seal victory over Everton in April."
"His contributions to Jurgen Klopp's team's Champions League triumph in 2019, meanwhile, have a guaranteed place in club legend."
After scoring crucial goals against Everton and Barcelona, the forward scored the decisive goal in the Champions League final win over Tottenham. He scored 41 goals in total across 175 Liverpool appearances.
Origi will likely join the Italian champions AC Milan in the 2022-23 campaign.
Where is Loris Karius going?
The 28-year-old shot-stopper blundered his lines in the 2018 Champions League final match against Real Madrid.
The German international inadvertently rolled a ball to Karim Benzema, allowing the Frenchman to score. And then flapped Gareth Bale's long-range effort into the net.
This would have been his last competitive appearance for the club. He has since spent time at Union Berlin and Besiktas.
Liverpool also mentioned him and wrote, "Karius joined Liverpool from FSV Mainz 05 in the summer of 2016 and went on to play 49 games under Klopp during his first two seasons on Merseyside.
"He started every Champions League match in 2017-18 as Klopp's men surged to the final in Kyiv, though it would end in personal and collective disappointment with a 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid.
"The German then spent time on loan with Besiktas and Union Berlin before being part of the Reds' goalkeeping group at the AXA Training Centre during 2021-22."
Ben Woodburn and Sheyi Ojo were the other seniors from Jurgen Klopp's ranks who were shown the door at Anfield.
Ojo, signed by the Merseyside club from MK Dons on November 11, 2011, made 13 appearances and scored one goal. Whereas Woodburn, a 22-year-old midfielder who became the club's youngest goal-scorer, made 11 appearances for Liverpool before being loaned to Hearts, Blackpool, and Sheffield United.
Liverpool also allowed Elijah Dixon Bonner, Luis Longstaff, and Sean Wilson to leave the academy.
