Is Arsenal's top 4 spot bid over after losing to Brighton
Arsenal’s chances of qualifying for a Champions League spot might be over. They lost 2-1 to previously out of form Brighton at Emirates Stadium.
It was their second consecutive loss after an embarrassing 3-0 performance against Crystal Palace on April 5.
Arsenal went into the match tied for the fourth spot with Tottenham. They looked weak as Brighton got a two-goal lead before the halftime. They had more shots, better pass accuracy, and controlled 65% of the ball but still failed to convert all except one opportunity into a goal. Leonardo Trossard in the 28th minute and Enock Mwepu in the 66th minute were the goal scorers for Brighton, while Martin Ødegaard in the 89th minute was the sole goal scorer for Arsenal.
The absence of left-back Kieran Tierney and Ghanian holding midfielder Thomas Partey is proving disastrous for Arsenal in the late-season battle for a top-four finish behind Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Arsenal is currently at the fifth spot with 54 points in 30 games, just behind Tottenham, who has 57 points in 31 games.
Leonardo Trossard opened the scoring for Brighton in the 28th minute with a one-touch shot into the top corner on Enock Mwepu’s pass. The Zambian Enock Mwepu then doubled the lead in the 66th minute with a shot into the bottom corner of the goalpost on a byline from Moisés Caicedo.
Martin Ødegaard scored Arsenal’s only goal with a long-range shot that went into the net after a slight deflection from the goalpost with just one minute left on the clock. However, Arsenal did not have enough time to score the equalizer within the regulation time and lost the game.
Arsenal still has seven more matches left to play compared to seven left for Brighton. If they can sort out the issues with their form, Arsenal might be over to take over the fourth spot from Tottenham.
Arsenal will next play against Southampton on April 16 at St. Mary’s Stadium and Tottenham will go up against Brighton at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 16.
