Indian Super League: Mumbai City stun Bengaluru 4-0
Durand Cup 2022 winners Mumbai City continue their run at the top of the game this season after thrashing Sunil Chhetri-led Bengaluru, 4-0 at the Mumbai Football Arena on Thursday
Jorge Diaz opened the scoring in the 14th minute, and Lalengmawia Ralte doubled the lead 32 minutes in. Bipin Singh came clutch in the 58th minute, and 14 minutes later, Lallinzuala Chhangte was the fourth player to convert for Mumbai City.
Head coach Des Buckingham is delighted to see his team's consistent efforts bearing fruit. The victory saw his side moving to second place, just one point behind Hyderabad leaders.
Des Buckingham generously praised his squad for remaining unbeaten this season. They are now second on the table with 15 points from seven games.
"I'm happy with the result and the performance. It's about trying to get better in every game and we've shown different ways that we can play," Des Buckingham said.
His team has been widely lauded for their strong midfield, adeptly winning back possession and creating chances. They ultimately cornered Sunil Chhetri, and his boys as Bengaluru slumped into their fourth successive defeat this season.
They are now in 10th position with only four points from six games. As expected, Mumbai started the match in high spirits and soon scored their first goal.
Alan Costa could not stop Jorge Diaz from seizing the ball and slotting it past the goalie. The match was paused briefly as the lights at the stadium went off.
Once it resumed, Lalengmawia Ralte converted in the 32nd minute when the Bengaluru defence momentarily fumbled. Right wing-back Rahul Bheke passed a shot to Greg Stewart down the right side of the box.
A brilliant cutback by Greg Stewart enabled Lalengmawia Ralte to slot home. The third goal was another spectacular sight in the second half when Jorge Diaz headed down a cross from the wide right allowing Bipin to head home.
Mumbai City was on a football rampage with a three-goal lead over a vulnerable Bengaluru side. Despite Sunil Chhetri's entry into the proceedings, Bengaluru couldn't eke out a late resurgence.
Lallinzuala Chhangte added another goal to the tally in the 74th minute. After weak defending on the left flank, Bengaluru's right side began to crumble. Jorge Diaz's pass, after a slight deflection by Sandesh Jhingan, fell into Lallinzuala Chhangte's path.
The winger grabbed the opportunity with a kick into the top left corner of the goal to lead Mumbai City into a pulsating victory. The Islanders will fly to Guwahati to face NorthEast United on November 25.
The Blues will travel to Fatorda to encounter Goa on November 26.
