Indian Super League: Mumbai City climb to second place after six-goal win over Chennaiyin
Mumbai City served a 6-2 win to Chennaiyin despite the latter's dominating run in the first half at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai
Des Buckingham's side dominated with goals from Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Greg Stewart, Vinith Rai, Vignesh Dakshinamurthy, Alberto Noguera and Bipin Singh.
Both teams battled for power in the first 10 minutes of the match. Prasanth attacked towards the right, but Mandar Rao Desai challenged his move.
Nineteen minutes in, Petar Sliskovic headed home past Mumbai's Phurba Lachenpa as Rahim Ali sent a cross down to the Croatian into the middle of the box.
Mumbai was trying harder with every minute, but Fallou's steely presence in the Chennaiyin defence curtailed the Islanders' efforts. Prasanth made another attempt, but Sangwan marked Sliskovic to block the clearing.
He lost his balance, and the shot hit the wrong side of the net. Abdenasser El Khayati then doubled the lead with a well-timed goal from the right. Sliskovic provided the assist as he dribbled from the halfway line.
The visitors converted in the 34th minute with a strike from Jorge Pereyra Diaz. The first half received three minutes of stoppage time, where Debjit Majumder was booked with a yellow and Mumbai City FC earned a penalty.
The Chennaiyin shot-stopper came in strong and slightly late inside the box. Greg Stewart landed another goal as he tapped the ball in from the left side of the net, and Majumder went the other way.
The teams started the second half with a 2-2 draw as the home team pursued their first home win. Mumbai coach Des Buckingham replaced Mandar Desai and Lalengmawia Ralte with Vinith Rai and Vignesh Dakshinamurthy.
The decision paid off for the visitors as Vinith Rai brought in Mumbai's third of the day in the 50th minute. Majumder then blocked Lallianzuala Chhangte's effort to slot in a goal with his left foot.
Mumbai went two goals ahead when Dakshinamurthy converted with a left-footed long-range volley. Sajid Dhot and Vincy Baretto came in for Rahim Ali and Prasanth as Chennaiyin buckled up for the remaining minutes ahead.
Buckingham sent for Alberto Noguera and benched Jorge Diaz only to benefit from the Brit's third substitution of the evening. Noguera then netted their fifth goal of the night.
Mourtada Fall replaced Ahmed Jahouh 68 minutes into a game dominated mainly by Mumbai City. Chennaiyin FC captain Anirudh Thapa launched a header, but Lachenpa saved it with ease.
Head coach Thomas Brdaric deployed Joby Justin and Suhail Pasha in a last-ditch attempt to pull his team forward. Joby was energetic in the last few minutes, eliciting a dive from the MCFC keeper, who saved the shot.
With ten minutes remaining, Edwin Sydney was sent in place of Ajith Kumar, but Buckingham's side netted one last time in the first minute of added time through Bipin Singh, shattering Chennaiyin FC's hopes of winning.
The Durand Cup 2022 winners are now four points behind leaders Hyderabad FC. Chennaiyin is ranked sixth as of now. Coach Brdaric spoke up after the match, blaming their loss on "lack of concentration [and] technical mistakes."
"We invited the opponent to score," he added. However, there were moments worth celebrating, too, as Petar Sliskovic scored his first-ever ISL goal, and Nasser ElKhayati was impressive in his debut for the Marina Machans.
