Indian Super League: East Bengal Club defeats NorthEast United 3-1
Emami East Bengal Club defeated NorthEast United 3-1 in the Indian Super League clash at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, on October 20
Within the regulation time, Cleiton Silva in the 11th minute, Charalampos Kyriakou in the 52nd minute and Jordan O'Doherty in the 84th minute were the goalscorers for East Bengal.
In contrast, in the second minute of the extended time, Mark Derbyshire was the lone goalscorer for NorthEast United FC.
East Bengal manager Stephen Constantine made four changes to the squad after their 2-1 loss to FC Goa on October 12. NorthEast United made just one change by bringing Rochharzela following their 3-0 loss to Hyderabad FC.
The match had a cagey start, with both squads taking some time to discover their rhythm. East Bengal got an opportunity to open the scoring in the 10th minute when Cleiton Silva fired a long-ranged volley but failed to find the net.
NorthEast United FC maintained control of the ball throughout the rest of the first half but struggled to create many opportunities. They got a golden chance to level the score in the 45th minute, but Emil Benny's on-target shot bounced off the bar.
However, the 35-year-old Brazillian forward slotted the ball into the net. One minute later, he slotted the ball into the net after receiving a well-placed pass from Mahesh Naorem Singh. The first half ended with a 1-0 lead for East Bengal.
East Bengal started the second half aggressively. Charalampos Kyriakou doubled the lead just eight minutes after the break after receiving an excellent cross from V.P. Suhair on the right wing.
Jordan O'Doherty added another goal for East Bengal in the 84th minute, while Mark Derbyshire scored a consolation goal in the extended time for NorthEast United.
The comfortable 3-1 victory over NorthEast United ended the winless streak of East Bengal and helped them claim their maiden win of the season.
East Bengal will lock horns with ATK Mohun Bagan in their next Indian Super League clash on October 29.
