Indian Super League 2022-23: Ashique Kuruniyan's signing would benefit ATK Mohun Bagan

ATK Mohun Bagan (ATKMB) has been persistent in their search for the best players for a long time. Despite losing the Indian Super League (ISL) title last season, the team are fan favourites for the upcoming campaign

The Kolkata giants have welcomed Ashique Kuruniyan, Lalrinliana Hnamte, Vishal Kaith, and Asish Rai, some of the most coveted players in the Indian circuit. If we consider head coach Juan Ferrando's strategic approach, Kuruniyan is one entry who could have a remarkable next season. The Malappuram-born winger entered Indian football when he found a spot in La Liga side Villarreal's third team in 2016.

Unfortunately, his move to Spain was affected by a hamstring injury, which surprisingly did not sabotage his game while playing for FC Pune City back in India. In 2019, Kuruniyan went to Bengaluru FC (BFC) when his last team disbanded. He spent three seasons, played 44 matches, and scored two goals with the Blues. During his three-year stint, he assumed multiple roles, including an out-and-out winger and a full-back. To compensate for his weaker defensive abilities, he capitalised on his ability to carry the ball up the pitch. Under Marco Pezzaiuoli, the Kerala boy was assigned a similar role. Interestingly, some people think his current position undermines his attacking prowess, which is also why Ferrando honing him at ATK Mohun Bagan might do justice to the player's full potential.

Kuruniyan's experience and skills might be what Ferrando needs

In the match against Afghanistan in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, he was a left-winger, and the 25-year-old grabbed an assist for the match-winning goal, becoming one of the star performers of the night. Playing further up the pitch at Bagan might be effective for Kuruniyan. Ferrando's gameplay often involves his team pressing from the front. So Kuruniyan, known for his electric pace and work rate, might enhance the squad. Similarly, he could also be helpful in Ferrando's occasional three-at-the-back formation, considering how he is capable of being a wing-back. The versatile winger has been a consistent starter in both club and national team colours, even though he had different roles.

Despite his underwhelming 2021-22 season, he was still lauded for completing 61 per cent of his attempted dribbles and for his high spirit despite being fouled 1.1 times in every game. Kuruniyan had completed 1.6 dribbles per game, double the number from last season. He was also responsible for creating two big chances in his seven appearances under Cuadrat and grabbing one assist in the first season. His present form pales in comparison as his shots per game went down from 1.3 in 2020-21 to 0.8 last campaign. However, Kuruniyan is well versed with the delicate technicalities of the game and will possibly play further up the pitch. Now, it remains to be seen whether he could improve under the new team!
