Granit Xhaka and Nuno Traves takes Arsenal home
Manchester United took on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The match had enormous implications for the fifth-placed Arsenal and the fourth-placed Manchester United in the Premier League.
Ralf Rangnick-led team could not defeat Arsenal, as the Gunners added one more win to their name after ending a losing skid with a win over Chelsea.
The action-packed match in North London ended in a victory for Arsenal. With Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka, and Granit Xhaka taking the tally to 3-1 against Cristiano Ronaldo's sole goal.
Arsenal is now fourth on the points table, whereas Manchester United have slipped to 6th.
Horrible defence costs Manchester United the game
Manchester United called upon Scott McTominay, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Raphael Varane to assist after they had missed previous games. Due to injuries, Luke Shaw and Edinson Cavani, and Manchester United's dark horse Fred had to remain out.
Both sides made adjustments to their defences, and it was evident that either side looked comfortable at the back in the first half.
After only three minutes, Arsenal was in control thanks to Nuno Tavares, who scored the first for Arsenal, after errors from Alex Telles and Raphael Varane as David de Gea saved Bukayo Saka's shot.
Then, the video assistant referee ruled Eddie Nketiah's attempt for offside out. However, after looking at his pitchside monitor, the referee gave a penalty for Telles' foul.
Just like he did at Stamford Bridge, Bukayo Saka took the spot-kick and hit it in the opposite direction of David De Gea and doubled Arsenal's lead.
Manchester United quickly reduced their deficit by half as the returning Cristiano Ronaldo was able to score a goal just minutes before half-time by crossing a Matic at the far post. He found space between Gabriel Tavares and Nuno Tavares and netted the ball in the 35th minute.
Bruno Fernandes' missed chance takes away Manchester United's hopes
Tavares had a roller-coaster ride in the match as the Portuguese left-back gave away a penalty after Matic hit the ball with his raised arm when Manchester United applied pressure in the second half.
It set the stage for a Manchester United siege. However, Bruno Fernandes wasted their big chance by kicking a second-half spot-kick against the post. Bruno Fernandes waited for Ramsdale to go wrong, then he passed the ball wide of Ramsdale's goal, touching the post.
Although the second half was calmer, it flared when the midfielder failed in his spot-kick. Manchester United tried to find an equalizer, but Arsenal won the match with Granit Xhaka's final efforts.
Bruno Fernandes could not control the ball at the edge of his area. Mohamed Elneny then fed the ball to Granit Xhaka, who hit it for Arsenal's third goal from 25 yards with 20 minutes left.
Arsenal played out the last twenty minutes of the match comfortably and frustrated Manchester United while keeping the ball in play with 56% possession of it in the game's entirety.
