Football Transfer Window: Richarlison joins Tottenham Hotspur from Everton in a £60 million deal
Richarlison is set to have a medical in Brazil today after Tottenham Hotspur agreed with Everton to sign him in principle.
The Brazilian international, previously linked with Arsenal, is set to make a big-money move to north London.
At one point, the 25-year-old would be joining Arsenal as a new signing, but the Gunners have shifted their focus to alternative Samba stars such as Gabriel Jesus and Raphinha.
This has opened the door for Tottenham to swoop in, with another proven Premier League performer joining Antonio Conte's ranks following deals for Fraser Forster and Yves Bissouma.
Tottenham and Everton will continue to negotiate the final price for Richarlison today. Tottenham is expected to pay around £50 million for Richarlison, subject to those discussions.
The north London club may pay an additional £10 million in add-ons, bringing the total fee to around £60 million. Personal terms are thought to exist.
Everton rejected a £40 million bid for Richarlison on Wednesday before significantly increasing the offer. Another club expressed late interest in him, but Spurs are on track to complete the deal in the coming days. All parties are believed to want to join the Spurs.
According to reports, the South American star will sign a five-year contract extension with the Spurs until the summer of 2027.
Personal terms have been agreed upon, with medical tests being the final item to be completed before the necessary paperwork can be achieved.
What does Richarlison bring to Tottenham Hotspur
The Brazilian has been at Everton since 2018, but he now hopes to put his skills to the test on the European stage.
Tottenham would provide Richarlison with the platform to do so, as Conte's team qualified for the Champions League by finishing fourth last season.
Richarlison, who has 36 Brazil caps, has scored 53 goals in 152 games for Everton since joining from Watford for £51 million.
For Everton to stay in the top flight, he scored ten goals in 30 Premier League games last season.
Richarlison is the latest to join Tottenham ahead of the new season, following Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster and Ivan Perisic.
Does Tottenham Hotspur need Richarlison
Tottenham already has a lot of firepowers, with England captain Harry Kane a talismanic presence in the final third of the field.
They also have South Korean forward Son Heung-min on their books, who shared the Premier League Golden Boot last season.
Sweden international Dejan Kulusevski impressed after joining on loan from Juventus in January, but questions have been raised about how long Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn will remain.
Conte is keen to avoid running out of options in an essential field area, and Richarlison has been brought in as another ready-made starter.
The best teams do not sit back once they have three excellent players for three positions; instead, they bring in more excellent players to create internal competition for the positions required to fight on multiple fronts.
Consider the three teams that finished higher than Tottenham last season: Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea. All three have fearsome front lines that will have been bolstered with big-money signings by the end of the summer window.
Manchester City won the Premier League with 99 goals last season and signed Erling Haaland this summer. Liverpool finished second with 94 points and signed Darwin Nunez (while they have also sold Sadio Mane).
Chelsea is likely to sign Raheem Sterling and Raphinha to compete with Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, and Callum Hudson-Odoi while loaning Romelu Lukaku out.
