Football Transfer News: Renato Sanches could join Paris Saint-Germain amidst Manchester United's interest
Paris Saint-Germain is interested in signing Renato Sanches and has agreed on personal terms with Portugal international since last month
Sanches would reunite with Christophe Galtier and Luis Campos, who led Lille to the 2020-21 Ligue 1 title as head coach and sporting director, respectively.
The Parisian club is interested in him as Gini Wijnaldum prepares to join Roma on a season-long loan.
Paris Saint-Germain is pressing for a season-long loan with an option to buy, which would necessitate a contract renewal with Lille first, as his current term expires in less than a year.
Renato Sanches is close to signing with PSG
Sanches is poised to relocate to Paris permanently and has already agreed on personal terms.
PSG has agreed to pay €15 million (£12.5 million/$15 million) for the midfielder in the final year of his contract.
The player is no longer exercising with the team and has resorted to solitary workouts in the gym. This will be PSG's fourth summer acquisition, following Vitinha, Nordi Mukiele, and Hugo Ekitike.
Sanches signed a four-year contract with Lille in 2019 for €25 million (£21 million/$25.5 million), making him the club's most expensive signing. He was injured for the first half of the 2021-22 season but returned to play regularly.
Last season, he appeared in 31 games for the club in all competitions, scoring once and assisting on five others.
There has already been a two-week stalemate. While Sanches previously rejected Milan's efforts in favour of PSG, Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara will not give up since they believe they still have a chance.
Whereas there have been calls for Sanches from the Premier League as well.
Is Renato Sanches Manchester United's Frenkie de Jong alternative?
Ruben Neves of Wolves and Renato Sanches of Lille are also reported as alternatives on the club's radar.
Frenkie de Jong remains Manchester United's top midfield transfer target, although negotiations have been stalled for three months. As a result, Manchester United must be prepared to shift to other options at some point.
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag previously worked with De Jong at Ajax and declared him the club's priority upon his hire.
All summer, Neves has been a reliable backup option. The issue is that a deal at this late point in the transfer window will be prohibitively expensive.
Wolves did not intend to sell Neves for a low price in the first place, and if they do, they will have only a little time to sign a successor.
Wolves had slapped a £75 million price tag on Neves a little over a month ago in an attempt to discourage bidders. But unfortunately, it appears to have been successful.
His agent, Jorge Mendes, has been unable to secure a massive move to Barcelona. Thus Neves will start the season with Wolves.
A deal could be reasonable if Manchester United can reduce its asking price to around £60 million. According to sources, the agreed-upon fee for Frenkie de Jong is £63 million plus add-ons.
Neves has Premier League experience, which gives him an advantage over De Jong, and he would not have to be persuaded to forego Champions League participation.
He also knows Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, and Cristiano Ronaldo from the Portugal national squad. He sees Manchester United as a step forward, not a step down.
Renato Sanches is another Portugal international who would be significantly less expensive. CalcioMercato had valued him at barely £25 million.
On the other hand, Sanches may not be a good match for Manchester United in a deep-lying midfield role.
He is at his best when he is allowed to charge forward, and forcing him to play at the back of Manchester United's formation may not be the ideal way to use his abilities.
However, the 24-year-old has a fantastic track record. He has already won titles with Sporting in Portugal, Bayern Munich in Germany, and Lille in France.
