Football Transfer News: Edinson Cavani joins LaLiga side Valencia on a two-year deal
Edinson Cavani, formerly Manchester United, has signed a two-year contract with Valencia of Spain
Edinson Cavani's transfer to Valencia was revealed on Monday, and he will join the Spanish club for free. The 35-year-old moves to La Liga after spending the previous two seasons with Manchester United.
As his Old Trafford contract expired earlier this summer, the 35-year-old Uruguayan striker was free to sign anywhere he wanted.
Despite offers from Boca Juniors and Villarreal, the Uruguayan star signed a two-year contract with the Spanish club. In La Liga, he may expect an annual salary of almost $2 million.
The former PSG forward witnessed his new team's 1-0 LaLiga loss to Atletico Madrid at Valencia's Mestalla Stadium.
Less than 30 minutes before the team's La Liga match versus Atletico Madrid, the signing of Cavani was announced. On Sunday, when they visit Getafe, the Uruguayan might make his debut for the club.
Edinson Cavani had interest from all over the world
Even though Real Sociedad are still searching to replace Swedish forward Alexander Isak, who signed with Newcastle last week for €70 million plus €5 million in add-ons, Valencia beat them to the punch and signed the veteran.
Upon arrival, Cavani said, "I am happy to be here. I wanted to play in Spain, and Valencia was willing to bet on me."
It has been reported that European and South American clubs such as Boca Juniors and Penarol attempted to sign Cavani, but he declined their offers.
The Uruguayan international reportedly wants to be in top shape for what may be his final World Cup this coming winter in Qatar.
Cavani scored 17 goals in 39 games in his debut season at United, but he struggled to maintain a starting position the following year.
While playing for Manchester United last season, the Uruguayan international scored just two goals in the Premier League before his contract expired, and he was released early this year.
Cavani began his professional career in Uruguay with Danubio, but he moved to Europe in 2007 by signing with Palermo.
He spent four years in Sicily before moving to Napoli, where he became the league's leading scorer the following year by tallying 104 goals in 138 games.
After being signed by PSG in 2013, he spent the next seven seasons there, eventually becoming the club's all-time leading scorer. In 2020, he signed with Manchester United, where he would spend the next two years playing.
After Cavani left, United had only one recognizable striker in Cristiano Ronaldo.
Earlier in June, six players left the club after their contracts expired, prompting manager Erik ten Hag to hunt for reinforcements.
After reaching an agreement with Ajax for the signing of Brazilian winger Antony, Manchester United are poised to make their fifth signing and add to their already impressive roster.
After starting the season with a loss and a win, Valencia is presently ranked 14th in La Liga.
