Football Transfer News : Barcelona rejects Manchester United offer for Frenkie de Jong
Barcelona has rejected Manchester United's initial bid for Frenkie de Jong and has now set their asking price
Erik ten Hag worked with De Jong at Ajax and wants to make the Netherlands international his first signing at Manchester United. Erik ten Hag, the Dutch manager of Old Trafford, has signed a three-year deal and is aware that reinforcements are required to improve the club's fortunes.
Manchester United has been in negotiations with Barcelona for several weeks. They have now presented a proposal worth €60m (£51m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons.
A football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, says Barcelona turned down the offer. And ESPN claims Barcelona is still seeking an overall package of €100m (£85m).
The Spanish giants are willing to sell De Jong to balance the books during the ongoing financial crisis at Camp Nou. But the Spanish giants won't let him go cheap.
Barcelona rejects Manchester United's offer
Barcelona is in massive debt and must bring in €4m to pay for every €1m they wish to spend. Frenkie de Jong, a young Dutch star and in-demand player, is the best way to achieve this. This is something Barcelona must do quickly and for a large number. Already, the club has guaranteed deals for Andreas Christensen's and Franck Kessie's free transfers. In addition, a move for Robert Lewandowski, a Polish striker, is also on the table.
Fabrizio Romano, a football reporter, reported that Manchester United offered Barcelona the initial offer to De Jong when the European summer transfer window opened Friday, June 10, 2022. Romano said, "Manchester United have made an opening proposal for Frenkie de Jong after talks started June 1. €60m plus €10m add-ons. #MUFC Barcelona has turned down this opening bid - but clubs remain in contact. De Jong has never indicated his desire to anyone. He's still waiting."
Barcelona values De Jong at €85 million, and they are willing to let him go due to financial difficulties. If they reached a deal, they could pursue players like Bernardo Silva from Manchester City and Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.
What about Manchester United's target Darwin Nunez?
Manchester United are ready to give up in their pursuit of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, as they were concerned about a bidding war against Liverpool.
Nunez is in the best position for the Anfield club to sign, and Manchester United would have loved to have Nunez at Old Trafford, but they knew it was futile.
Manchester United is looking to strengthen their forward line in the summer. After Edinson Cavani and Antony Martial's expected departure, Cristiano Ronaldo is now the club's only recognized striker.
And Jadon Sancho's preference to play on the left-hand side means that there is a gap on the right wing.
Manchester United decided to hire Darwin Nunez, Cavani's fellow countryman, to solve the problem. The forward had scored 24 goals in 41 games this season, including six in the Champions League.
Manchester United was probably confident that Nunez would agree to Erik ten Hag's project as he preferred the Premier League. But all this was before Liverpool arrived.
Sadio Mane riddle to solve
Sadio Mane is expected to leave Anfield this summer as Bayern Munich has expressed interest in the winger. Jurgen Klopp will therefore need a replacement.
Liverpool is confident they will land the rising Uruguayan star as an attacking substitute for Sadio Mane. Nunez is their top priority, and they are willing to pay more than £75 million ($94 million) for a club-record fee to get him.
Liverpool desires to defeat any rival club for Nunez after they leapfrogged Tottenham in January to grab Luis Diaz.
