Football News: UEFA bans Russia from Euro 2024 qualifiers following the Ukraine conflict
After they conflicted with Ukraine, Russia was officially disqualified from qualifying for Euro 2024 by UEFA
As a result of this conflict, FIFA, and UEFA have suspended all competitions from which Russian clubs and national teams could otherwise benefit until further notice.
On October 9, Frankfurt will host the qualification draw for Germany's hosting of Euro 2024.
As a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European football's regulatory body decided to prolong the ban on Russian national and club sides.
This marks the second year straight when the country has been left out of a major international competition.
Since November 14, 2021, Russia has not played in any senior men's international game due to the country's exclusion from the qualifying play-offs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Like Russia's World Cup campaign, FC Spartak Moscow's run in the UEFA Europa League has ended as the team was eliminated from the tournament.
RB Leipzig, the lone Russian team, still competing in European competition for the 2021/22 season, received a bye into the quarterfinals.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected Russia's appeals against the suspensions in July.
Decided initially on February 28, 2022, by UEFA's executive committee, the ban on Russian teams was upheld on July 15, 2022, by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
In the statement, UEFA mentioned, "The European governing body said in a statement: "All Russian teams are currently suspended following the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee of February 28, 2022, which the Court of Arbitration has further confirmed for Sport on July 15, 2022."
"Russia is therefore not included in the UEFA European Football Championship 2022-24 qualifying draw."
For the European Championship this summer, Portugal will represent the country in place of the women's squad.
St. Petersburg was supposed to host the 2022 Champions League final, but the game was shifted to Paris.
UEFA cut ties with Russian energy giant Gazprom and barred the country's clubs from competing in the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League this season.
Russia wants Ukrainian manager Oleksandr Petrakov banned
In light of recent events, it is no surprise that Russian football officials have been lobbying UEFA to suspend Oleksandr Petrakov, manager of Ukraine, for expressing a desire to defend his nation through the use of force.
In addition, Petrakov pledged that if Russian forces ventured into the Ukrainian capital, he would join them on the front lines, "I thought, if they come to Kyiv, I will pick up a weapon and defend my city,"
The Football Union of Russia (FUR) was made aware of the statements after they were published in several continental newspapers.
Deputy FUR secretary general Denis Rogachev has written to the UEFA control, ethics, and disciplinary body demanding that Petrakov be banned for his comments.
Ukrainian politician and UEFA Executive Committee member, Andriy Pavelko has already stated that Russia will not be included in the October draw that will be taking place in Frankfurt, Germany for the group stage of Euro 2024.
Bosnia and Herzegovina's football federation has stated that a friendly match against Russia has been scheduled for November, despite the lingering international ban.
