Mohammed Salim
Mohammed Salim is the first Indian player to have competed for a club outside of India. He was born and brought up in Calcutta, where his career took off with Mohammedan SC. The team won the Calcutta Football League five consecutive times, as a result of which he attracted the attention of a Scottish team. He ultimately signed a deal with Celtic and became the first Indian footballer to compete in a European team.
Bhaichung Bhutia
Bhaichung Bhutia is known all over the country and abroad due to his football exploits. He is no less than a national hero in India, and in 1999, the Sikkimese player accepted a deal from an English club called Bury. He made 37 appearances for the English club, and during his stint there, he scored eight goals and brought glory to India.
Sunil Chhetri
Sunil Chhetri quickly lists the best Indian players of the previous ten years. His contribution to the country is unmatched not just in football but also in other sports in India. He has scored 74 goals which made him the country's leading goal scorer and fourth in the world. He became the third Indian subcontinent player to compete in a foreign club. In 2010, he joined Kansas City but never played for the team. He then received another chance after participating in a few games for Sporting CP, Portugal's reserve team.
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is the first and only Indian player to participate in a UEFA Europa League match. Sandhu is India's number one goalkeeper, and his contributions have helped India countless times. In 2014, he joined FC Stabaek, a Norwegian club and made his first appearance for them in 2015. He then appeared in the UEFA Europa League qualifying stages against Connah's Quay Nomads. It became a moment of pride for India as no other Indian had ever achieved such order.
Subrata Pal
Subrata Pal made his debut appearance in 2004 and is still playing in a good position. He became the first Indian goalkeeper to compete in a foreign country. He played for FC Vestsjaelland, a Danish team he joined in 2014. He was a part of their reserve team and made many appearances. Likewise, these players have set inspiring examples for posterity to look at and follow so that more Indians grow to compete in major events like the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and other top leagues.
