Football News: Sevilla confirms former Real Madrid midfielder Isco's signing
Former Real Madrid midfielder Isco signed as a free agent with Sevilla, the LaLiga club announced Monday
Isco, whose Real Madrid contract expired in June, has signed a two-year contract with Sevilla.
The 30-year-old offensive midfielder is the club's third signing of the season, following the arrivals of defenders Marco and Alex Telles to compensate for the exits of Jules Koundé and Diego Carlos.
On Sunday, Sevilla announced an agreement to sign Isco, followed by confirmation that the transfer was completed the next day.
Isco, 30, will rejoin former Spain and Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui in Sevilla.
Julen Lopetegui, the manager of Sevilla, tutored Isco while he was at the pinnacle of his powers with Real Madrid and Spain. Isco was part of Spain's World Cup squad in Russia in 2018.
"I'm 30 years old, I'm in the prime of life, I feel young, and I have many joys to give," Isco said. "I understand that there are doubts about my past few years, where I've been unable or have not been allowed to play as I wanted.
"Now it's my turn to dispel those doubts and send them a message of calmmess. I'm going to give it my all and show the level that I think I've never lost. I'll take care of dispelling those doubt," he added.
The midfielder with 38 caps for Spain will be eager to resurrect his career after being a periphery player at Real Madrid in recent seasons.
The midfielder made his debut for Valencia before moving to Malaga in 2011. Isco was a key player when Manuel Pellegrini's Andulasian side advanced to the Champions League knockout stages in 2013.
Isco joined Madrid from Malaga in 2013 for €30 million and went on to win five Champions League medals, three La Liga crowns, and one Copa del Rey during his nine-year stay.
However, in recent seasons, he has not seen much action as a starter. He also lost his spot on Spain's national squad due to current troubles.
Last season, he made 17 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti's side, starting three.
There were many suitors for Isco
Isco, a five-time Champions League winner, may no longer be relevant to Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu. However, at 30 years old, he can still be a valuable component of a team that consistently wants to qualify for the Champions League.
Sevilla was not the only team interested in signing him this summer, with Roma manager Jose Mourinho also keen on bringing the playmaker to the Italian city.
Mourinho and Isco share an agent in Jorge Mendes, but moving to Italy at this stage of his career did not appeal to the 38-times capped international.
Last season, Sevilla finished fourth in LaLiga and will compete in the Champions League this season.
Isco might make his Sevilla debut on Friday when the Andalusian club travels to Osasuna in their first league match.
