Football News: Ralf Rangnick wanted Manchester United to sign Erling Haaland and three other players
Former interim boss Ralf Rangnick left a last word of advice to Manchester United before his departure. He asked his team to sign Erling Haaland and three other players, which should have been taken more seriously
Rangnick walked into Old Trafford in December as interim manager, and his short managerial stint was to be followed by a two-year consultancy role this summer.
Although the chances of Erling Haaland donning the red jersey were slim to none, the German wanted the Manchester outfit to propose a deal.
The Norwegian's release clause in his deal with Borussia Dortmund was activated this summer, but Manchester City lured him in.
According to the media, Manchester United didn't initiate contact with Haaland. However, other reports state that the Citizen striker Erling Haaland snubbed Manchester United as his next destination while at Borussia Dortmund.
The 22-year-old decided to move to City despite raging interest from Europe's top teams, including Manchester United and Real Madrid. The Cityzens paid the Norwegian striker's release clause of €60 million to bring him to Etihad.
Before his transfer to City, the Red Devils had placed an offer quickly dismissed by the striker. The forward disapproved of the current state of affairs of the Old Trafford side and the ordeal that Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement has brought upon them.
Who are the other players besides Haaland?
Apart from Haaland, Rangnick also had three more players in mind - RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol, midfielder Kondra Laimer and striker Christopher Nkunku.
In addition, Rangnick appreciated the style of now-Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez before they secured his signature in January. Now, the world wonders if Manchester United made a mistake by not paying heed to Ralf Rangnick's suggestions.
Despite his failure to take the team to heights as the interim boss, one knows better than to doubt Rangnick's capacity as a manager and his eye for talent.
The German helped the Red Bull group produce countless world-class talents in recent years. The Red Devils might have made progress had they listened to their former boss.
Haaland was visibly beyond their reach, but the trio of Gvardiol, Laimer and Nkunku were all viable options. Likewise, the club inaugurated the Erik ten Hag era by surrendering to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion in their opening Premier League game.
It is now to be seen whether United can recover from the shocking loss and deliver a better performance than last season.
