Football News: Pre-season match-Manchester United 4-0 Liverpool
Manchester United kickstarted their Erik ten Hag era in style by defeating Liverpool 4-0 in the first pre-season game. The match occurred at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok
The list of gold scorers in the match includes Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial and Facundo Pellistri. Even without Cristiano Ronaldo as a part of the 31-man squad travelling to Bangkok, Martial led the charge against the Reds, their biggest rivals.
Martial stole the show, and Jadon Sancho showed improvement
After failing to impress during his loan spell at Sevilla, Martial has returned to United with a solid resolve to prove his worth to Ten Hag. Armed with a smile, he had reasonable control over the ball and was positioned at the frontline alongside Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho. They were supported by their chief creator and captain, Bruno Fernandes. Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho, who had a disappointing first season at Old Trafford, opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a clean drop into the far bottom corner. After that, they scored two goals in three minutes. Fred doubled United's lead, and it was Martial's turn to impress before it hit half-time as he rushed to the front of the goalpost. Once he was positioned correctly, he flung the ball over Alisson Becker.
David de Gea's injury and Tyrell Malacia's debut
On the other hand, De Gea, who usually occupies the starting line up was deployed in the second half. After coming off his line to chase a loose ball, the Spaniard was replaced by Tom Heaton due to a flare-up in the former's injury. United's number one had to be replaced with 20 minutes remaining on the clock. After that, Tyrell Malacia, the club's only signing of the summer transfer window so far, replaced Luke Shaw. The former Feyenoord man is expected to take some time adjusting to the frantic pace and tempo of the Premier League, although he didn't disappoint. United's new number 12 will likely improve with every passing game and training session with ten Hag and his squad.
Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal made notable contributions
After making significant changes in the second half, Ten Hag sent his youngsters Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage to shake up the midfield. The talented pair will now be targeting more minutes during the pre-season. As the match progressed into the last few minutes, Eric Bailly won back possession outside his box, dashed past Thiago, and found Facundo Pellistri. He passed the ball to Amad, who squared it back so that the Uruguayan winger could find the net minutes before registering their first pre-season win. Hence, Ten Hag's arrival has indeed turned heads, and their first outing under the 52-year-old couldn't have gone any better.
