Football News: Paris Saint-Germain swoops Valencia captain Carlos Soler amidst financial problems in the club
PSG has agreed to sign Carlos Soler. The Spanish media have speculated that PSG is planning a late transfer window swoop for Valencia's midfielder
The French team's pursuit of Valencia's captain had been known for over a week.
For a reported €18 million plus €3 million in add-ons, trade journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that PSG will sign Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler, 25. Soler will sign a 5-year contract in the French capital.
With only two days remaining in the summer transfer window, the transaction has been finalized, and Soler, along with Goncalo Guedes, will be departing the club.
The Paris club sees the 25-year-old Valencia forward as a significant market opportunity this summer because he has just one year left on his current contract and is a Spain international (nine caps, three goals).
Soler's current contract is set to expire at the end of the upcoming season. After eight months of silence from the club over a new, improved contract, Soler met with Valencia on Monday, who allegedly offered him a five-year offer.
Having already signed with PSG when Valencia accepted their 21 million euro bid, it was too late to rescind the deal.
The sports daily reports that PSG sees the player as a creator rather than an organiser in the middle of the field and that he would be used as part of the midfield rotation within the squad.
How did Carlos Soler fare at Valencia?
The loss of Soler has left a big void in the team. Both he and Guedes, who helped keep the squad afloat last season, had left the club when Peter Lim managed it.
The central midfielder progressed through the club's junior system to become a regular starter for the La Liga club, where he has played 225 games at the senior level. During that time, he scored 36 goals and assisted 31 others in competitive play.
The player started his professional career with Valencia and is now venturing outside Spain with a roster full of established talents.
If he wants to be a starter and make Luis Enrique's World Cup roster for Qatar, he will have to work hard.
The transfer window closes in two days on Thursday, and talks have already begun, but the PSG management expects to finalise the transaction fast.
Soler is expected to become PSG's sixth signing of the summer transfer window, for whom a fee of little over €15 million is being discussed between the parties.
Due to financial difficulties, Valencia has decided to sell a valuable player for less than they hoped to get.
As soon as Soler arrives, perhaps another contract will be signed. According to reports, Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz will shortly have his PSG medical. The French club still wants to sign a centre-back before the transfer window closes.
If Soler were to join, he would join Vitinha, Renato Sanches, and the impending arrival of Fabián Ruiz from Napoli as four new midfielders to join the team this summer transfer window.
Once PSG's weak spot, with Marco Verratti as its lone reliable midfielder, the position is now perhaps the club's greatest strength.
On Wednesday, PSG will travel to Stadium Municipal to take on Toulouse.
