Football News: Monday Blues for Liverpool as Darwin Nunez sees Red
Liverpool is behind Manchester City by four points. It should remind the club of the lesson from the previous year where they lost the PL by a whisker
Game of near misses and missed opportunities.
Anderson missed an opportunity to score when he made a mistake in the ninth minute and missed from close range. This is particularly unusual for Anderson because he had played well before this match, even after only two games with the team.
Another missed opportunity was from Nunez at the end of the first half when Nunez mis-hit a shot from about the same position and watched it hit off the post.
Liverpool's shot count reached 17 halfway through the game, and they had dominated possession. Liverpool's opponents found a classic counter, with only 25 per cent possession.
Guaita's hurried clearance from another attack found Eberechi Eze, who side-stepped Fabinho and played in Zaha, who had the pace to stay out of the reach of the back-tracking Virgil Van Dijk and place a shot across Alisson Becker and inside the far post.
The Liverpool goalkeeper quickly denied Zaha after he broke through the defensive line for the second time. The hosts finished the half strongly but couldn't find the goal, with a header from Elliot that was bounced away. Nunez also struck the post, leaving them plenty to do.
Joel Ward, a palace captain and defender for them, denied Nunez with his body and arm and was not ruled unnatural as he slid in.
Within just four minutes, the score was level thanks to a goal by Juan Diaz. He breezed past five Palace players and curled a right-footed shot past Guaita.
The hosts continued to attack with ten men because the 11th player left them susceptible to gaps at the back of their defensive lines.
A lack of creativity and an inability to find the back of the net cost Liverpool against Crystal Palace. Despite a decisive home run in front of a full-house, they're still second in points but only behind City on goal differential.
