Football News: Manchester United's first win of the season against Liverpool
Manchester United had a tough weekend. They were at the bottom of the table after their four-goal loss at Brentford, and then they lost at home to Brighton
Manchester United defeated Liverpool 2-1 in a game filled with battle, grit, and quality that astonished Jurgen Klopp's team.
Even though it was only the third game of the season for both teams, goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford on either side of halftime earned Man United and manager Erik ten Hag a crucial three points.
Liverpool's Mohamed Salah scored late in the game, but the Red Devils held on for the victory.
Manchester United outclasses Liverpool
As predicted before the game, a big group of United fans were upset with the club's direction under American owners. The Glazers demonstrated outside Old Trafford.
The ball was whizzing through the middle thanks to slick interaction from Scott McTominay, Sancho, and Bruno Fernandes. Rashford sped up to it, but Virgil van Dijk stopped him when he unloaded.
Following that, Rashford pushed Trent Alexander-Arnold away, the defender impeded him, and Christian Eriksen's free kick on the outskirts of the area earned a corner.
Manchester United defended admirably for the rest of the first half, giving Liverpool few chances, and went into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.
Raphael Varane made an outstanding intervention, snatching the ball off Roberto Firmino's toes in the area. Those in red advanced upfield before Elanga found Sancho, who feinted, left James Milner on his behind, and beat Alisson with ease.
Soon after the break, Rashford increased the home side's lead with a superb finish beyond Alisson from Anthony Martial's through cross, leaving him just the keeper to beat.
The Old Trafford fans chanted for their team throughout the second half, and Liverpool appeared to be at a loss for words as they attempted to claw their way back into the game.
Salah gave Liverpool a lifeline with nine minutes remaining. Ronaldo was introduced as United hoped to secure a thrilling victory. They did it. Ten Hag's term has finally begun.
Erik ten Hag benched Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire in favour of new acquisitions Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia, Scott McTominay, Raphael Varane, and Diogo Dalot.
After joining Manchester United from Real Madrid on Monday, new signing Casemiro was unveiled before the game and watched from a box.
Manchester United now has three points, one more than Liverpool, who has two points from their first three games.
This was Liverpool's first defeat in 22 Premier League games, and while Klopp will point to significant injury difficulties, his team did not show up for most of one of their most important games of the season.
Erik Ten Hag likes the "attitude."
Ten Hag was impressed with Man Utd's "attitude" in their recent game. "There was communication and a fighting spirit," he said. "I wanted a different approach and a different attitude and that is what they brought on the pitch.
He said it's not just about what he says but about the team willing to battle and be brave. "Make sure you are a team and battle and be brave and give each other options," he said.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire were left out
On why the two stars of United were left out, the Manchester United Manager said, "I have a squad and we have to use the squad. We play 50-60 games, from game to game we will see what team we will pick. I don't have to mention Maguire and Ronaldo, they are amazing players, and they will play a role in the future and the short future as well"
On Saturday, Aug. 27, Manchester United travels to Southampton for an early kickoff, while Liverpool hosts Bournemouth.
