Football News: Kylian Mbappe is on EA Sports Games Cover as the face of FIFA 23
According to a Monday announcement from EA Sports, the FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition cover players are Chelsea forward Sam Kerr and PSG star Kylian Mbappe
The 23-year-old Kylian Mbappe was Ligue 1's top scorer in 2021–22, assisted France in winning the World Cup in 2018 and has 33 goals in his Champions League career.
For the third year, Kylian Mbappe will represent the brand, and Kerr will be the first female soccer player to appear on the game's international cover.
In 2020–21 and 2021–22, Kerr, the captain of the Australian national side, led Chelsea to back-to-back league and FA Cup victories while also taking home the FAWSL Golden Boot.
Both athletes are dressed in their club uniforms, Kerr for Chelsea and Kylian Mbappe for Paris Saint-Germain, who was featured on the cover of the 2021 and 2022 issues by himself. Before then, Cristiano Ronaldo frequently appeared on the cover along with Lionel Messi.
This game's 30th iteration, created by UK company Electronic Arts, is also its final one to be made in collaboration with FIFA, the world soccer body.
Neither Kerr nor the first Matilda appeared in a Fifa edition first. The 2015 Women's World Cup coincided with the Australian edition of Fifa 16, which featured Steph Catley on the cover.
In the American edition and Canadian edition, Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair both made appearances, respectively. However, no woman has ever appeared on a global edition before.
Being featured on the cover is a significant breakthrough for women's football and Australia's Kerr, who scored 56 goals in 108 games.
Since its release, the video game has reportedly sold over 350 million copies, with annual editions typically selling over 30 million copies in both physical and digital form.
Football stars are known to take part and occasionally even contact the producers to voice their complaints over their grading.
FIFA's Ultimate Edition is a more expensive edition with extra features. Although the game's release date is not yet announced, it is predicted to be in late September.
FIFA and EA Sports revealed in May that their partnership would end in 2022, with FIFA 23 acting as the series's final instalment after failing to reach an agreement to extend their deal.
History of FIFA game covers
The FIFA video game series' covers have featured the faces of some of the greatest football players in history.
Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, and Wayne Rooney have recently been added to a list of honorees, including Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi. There have also been a few cult heroes, such as Paul Scholes and David Ginola.
When Kylian Mbappe was selected to be the face of FIFA 21, which was his first time appearing on the game's front cover, he followed in the footsteps of notable figures like Virgil van Dijk and Eden Hazard.
The 23-year-old received the honour for FIFA 22 once more and has since finished a rare hat-trick, falling one year short of a run that his PSG teammate Lionel Messi experienced when at Barcelona for FIFA 13, 14, 15, and 16.
Between FIFA 06 and FIFA 12, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney still maintains the record for the most consecutive cover appearances.
On October 21, 2021, FIFA 22 officially went on sale to the general public. EA Sports typically releases games on Fridays during the final week of September.
If that holds again this year, FIFA 23 will be available on Friday, September 30, 2021.
