Football News: ISL - Mumbai City FC's foreign contingent for the 2022-23 season
Mumbai City FC could've dominated the 2021-22 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) and lived to their expectations. However, they finished fifth in the league standings and missed a knockout berth
Now, they are using their financial power to rebuild their squad and restore the glory they've been robbed of. Head coach Des Buckingham hasn't given up, and his efforts bore fruit in the AFC Champions League group stage, where they seemed to play with much more confidence and vigor.
Furthermore, they have landed the best players in the recent summer transfer, so here's an introduction to all the six foreigners at Mumbai City FC ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Mourtada Fall (Center-back)
When Mourtada joined Goa FC in 2018, the Senegalese defender became one of the most revered centre-backs in the country. In addition, their opponent teams also got a taste of his attacking prowess when he scored 16 goals in 81 appearances. After moving to Mumbai City FC, he received the armband, and the Islanders have since managed to keep him on their side.
Rostyn Griffiths (Centre-back)
Although the upcoming season marks Griffiths' maiden appearance in an Indian league, he has worked closely with Des Buckingham during their time at Melbourne City, so the Englishman is expected to bring the best out of the Australian centre-back. He can also function as a defensive midfielder, replace Ahmed Jahouh on rare occasions, or be a partner to Jahouh if MCFC ever adopts a double-pivot system.
Ahmed Jahouh (Defensive midfielder)
Ahmed Jahouh is currently one of ISL's most consistent performers, making some successful tackles and passes. He was a key player during Goa's top-of-the-league finish in the 2019-20 ISL. The Moroccan international won the Indian Super League Winners Shield and the ISL title in his first season with MCFC.
Alberto Noguera (Attacking midfielder)
After joining Indian football in 2020, 32-year-old Alberto became an essential player in Goa FC, where he lifted the 2021 Durand Cup and bagged four goals and 11 assists in the ISL. His versatility will be valued and capitalised upon by Buckingham's side.
Jorge Pereyra Diaz (Center-forward)
Diaz used to Line up alongside Alvaro Vazquez in the Kerela Blasters frontline, where he netted eight goals and a single assist in 21 appearances. The Argentinian international might be able to unlock defences with his quick feet and off-the-ball movement by being partnered with Greg Stewart.
Greg Stewart (Center-forward)
Due to his impeccable maiden season, the Scottish attacker was roped in by Mumbai City FC earlier in the summer transfer window. He scored ten out of the 43 goals his former team Jamshedpur FC scored and also led the assists charts last season. He became the 'Hero of the League in his debut ISL campaign, and before that, the 32-year-old had won the Scottish Premiership title with Rangers FC in the 2020-21 season.
